Propane Fills on the Road

Are there any chain truck stops or gas stations who routinely have propane fills available? I am going across country and this is the first time I am using a propane generator. I am freaking out that I will need a fill and it will be a nightmare to find one. I am taking our dogs so will need to run the generator at least in the afternoons to keep the dogs in the rear cool. I have a 24 ft Isata 3.

Thank you for any insight!

Most of the Flying J's have propane and can refill your RV, they are open 24 hours. Their refilling stations are near the RV refueling lanes.

Home Depot and Lowes typically do not fill propane; they just do exchanges.

However Ace/True Value hardware stores typically do. As does Tractor Supply.

Most campgrounds fill, but if you're worried about your generator- you may not be stopping at one.

One of our favorite phone apps is called Allstays. it has a plethora of RVing functions one of which includes locations for propane.

While it might take a little preparation we have only run out of propane once when I forgot to check. Naturally it was on a Sunday and it was below freezing with most places closed. We found a Flying J down the road and had 2 full tanks within an hour.

I'm better at checking now.

If the OP is worried about fuel for their generator, they may not be staying at campgrounds (and thus wouldn't get propane from it).

I'm sure campgrounds will still sell you propane even if you're not staying there.

Never been anywhere in the US that I couldn't readily find a propane refill. Usually takes about a minute to find by using Google or asking a local.

Yup, agreed. But I wouldn't pay campground markup without doing it solely for the convenience.

Actually, I have found campground propane refill prices to be better than some other places I have locally, especially the swap-tank places.

Interesting. I try to stick to Tractor Supply or Ace Hardware- they seem to generally be the cheapest. But, I've been burned a couple of times that their propane guy is off that day or they have the propane tank + pump but can't use it for (insert reason).

Gas station propane is typically the worst, price-wise.

In other news, I'm off today for some campground propane.

She is in a class C so she needs a fill , not a bottle exchange.

Loves, Flying J and any truck stop is your best bet. We've always used those but only need to fill about once a season so don't need to worry. We have a 16 gal on board tank and stay at mostly sites with electric. Gen runs on gasoline.
