South Dakota campgrounds?

Hiyas, my wife would like to see Mnt rushmore this spring as well as some of the caves in the black hills, any of y'all know of a good camping spot within an hour of Mnt rushmore. we would prefer electrical hookups and bike trailes close but not required we dont mind drydocking either.

online i can see alot of choices but no real "ratings" to get an idea of whats good or not, your suggestions would be greatly appreciated

RV and Tent Camping in the Black Hills & Badlands | South Dakota
Here is a site that will get you to some camping spots. When we were there in 2009 we stayed at Spearfish City campground (which is a beautiful park but quite far from Rushmore and surrounding attractions) We also stayed at Steel Wheel (south of Deadwood) fair accomodations. We drove each day to the sites we wanted to see, spent most of our time away from the camper, gone after breakfast and not back until a late meal and sleep. Lots to see and do.

Black Hills National Forest- Camping & Cabins

Sheridan Lake campground run by the National Forest Service is an awesome campground and very near summer attractions in the Black Hills. I would recommend reservations.

Rafter J Bar Ranch, Hill City, SD ... http://www.rafterj.com... is a great place. Well maintained, large spaces not close to one another, other amenities. 27 mi. SW of Rapid City, SD on US Hwy 16. 12 mi further south, then back East on State Hwy 244 to Mt. Rushmore. We loved it there...good motorcycle riding; good hiking in, around and surrounding the RV park.

Our second choice was the Mount Rushmore KOA, 12620 Highway 244, Hill City, SD 57745.

Check out: RV Park Reviews :: Hill City, South Dakota ( SD ) - RV Parks and Campground Reviews

Enjoy! It's a great place to go RVing.

Rafter J in Hill City is about as nice as they come if you want hookups.

Sheridan Lake is the best if you get on the lake but no hookups there.

I live on the other side of South Dakota. One spot that is right off the trail system in the black hills is http://www.recsprings.com. I'm thinking about staying there the next time I make my way out there. If you need help PM me.

You said you don't have to have hookups??
We were there in 05 and stayed at
Custer State Park stockade lake south.
It has nice shower house but no hookups.
We went there on recommendation from another forum
member and enjoyed it.

We found this CG to be less crowded than many of
the private CGs.

Even if you don't stay in Custer state park it's well
worth a visit. We saw our first big horn sheep there
and it's a great scenic park to drive thru.

IF you are in the area be sure and drive
the "needles highway" to Rushmore.
It's a scenic highway that itself is worth the trip not
to mention visiting Rushmore.
Just google needles highway and you'll find pictures.

Here's a couple of our camp site way back in 05 at
Stockade lake south

We are booked into the Hill City KOA for 6 days the end of June. Got one of their deluxe pull through sites with patio etc. It is expensive but nice.

KOA is located in the center of things, make sure you do the wildlife loop, Needles hi-way, check out the 1880 train, Crazy Horse ( KOA has a night bus to both Crazy Horse and MT Rushmore ) and do try the Alpine INN for a great noon meal. There is a lot more just enjoy!!!
