St. Louis to Denver campgrounds

Traveling across MO and KS to CO in mid July. Do I need reservations at campgrounds along the way or will be able to find them as I progress.

Are you taking I-70? Last summer, we went from Branson, MO up to Kansas City, KS and then over to Colorado Springs. Basically road I-70 the whole way.

There really aren't that many along I-70 between STL and Denver. You will likely have to get off the interstate and go a few miles one direction or the other.

Depending on how far you want to travel each day, there is a nice COE campground on Lake Perry, west of Kansas City (close to Atchison/Ft. Leavenworth). Here is a link

If you are there on a weekday, probably won't need reservations. Weekend may be a different story.

Are you looking for public campgrounds, i.e. state parks and COE campgrounds, or commercial RV Parks along I-70?

It sounds like you are looking for places to overnight on your travels. There are plenty of commercial RV parks along I-70 from St. Louis to Denver and when we travel I never make reservations at a commercial park until the day we need it. We’ve never had a problem getting a spot doing it this way. One of the best RV parks we’ve stayed at on that route was Deer Creek Valley RV Park in Topeka, KS.

If you’re looking for public campgrounds in July then yes, I would make reservations ahead of time. This is especially true for weekends.

I wasn't paying close attention, but last night DW was reading the book "COE Campgrounds in America" and I remember her noting that Kansas had more COE campgrounds than she would have imagined. If you have a Senior Access Pass, they are usually $10 a night or so.

In 2014 we made a trip from Tulsa up to Salina, Kansas then west to Colorado Springs. We spent 1 night at Salina, Kansas KOA and 1 night at Goodland, Kansas KOA. Both were with in a couple miles of I-70. We had reservations made because of how busy I-70 is and had no issues with either one.

we made that that trip last year. cant recommend where we stayed but if you need a place sunday night - thursday, you won't need reservations.

Our slide motor detached the first night while setting up, Four seasons RV Acres in Albilene, KS took care of us and got us back on the road in the time it took for us to eat breakfast. They even recommended a really good diner.

DON"T GET on the TOLL road E470 in Denver. It cost us 62 dollars to use it from 70 to 25.

I70 Kansas (once you're off the Tpike) has numerous rest stops with parking loops dedicated for RVs. These loops are away from the truck parking areas and the auto drive-through. They also have RV dump stations and water risers spread about the area(NOT hookups). They allow 24hr stays. We have used them and really like them. If you've got an onboard generator for AC, its a very comfortable overnight.
The service areas on the Tpike allow overnight parking as well, but like all busy truck stops, they are noisy.

We stayed at ABC Campground in Branson, MO for a rally. Nice place but super friendly owners and staff. I'd happily return.

And then at Kansas City Jellystone. We were there as the season was winding down. The amenities were closing down, but the price wasn't. There were some Concrete Tee Pees right outside that were on RoadsideAmerica.com.

We moved onto Goodland KOA for just 2 nights. This was another- we caught very late in the season and the place was barren. Still paid full price for our night, though. Roadside attraction-wise, there was a Giant Easel that was cool to see. BUT, the real coup de grâce was going to Monument Rocks nearby in Grinnell. It took about 90 minutes to drive there, but was sooo worth it.

Once in Colorado Springs, we stayed at Mountain Dale RV Resort. This place was GORGEOUS and again- very friendly staff. We spent 2 fun-filled touristy weeks while there AND saw my wife's great uncle and a coworker/friend of mine.
