State parks in Texas

We have been trying different state parks in Texas and would like to hear about any info, yeah or nay, how good are the spots, level, etc would be appreciated. We have tried Bastrop, Lake Livingston, Tyler, Huntsville, Goliad, Stephen F Austin this past year. Has anyone been to Balmorea or any out that way? How about near Corpus?

We stayed at Lake Corpus Christi State park this past weekend and thought it was great. The lake is very low but you still have access to the water. Lots of deer and the park was well maintained. There is a burn ban right now so no open fires. McKinney Falls in Austin was a nice park

Were the spots level? We stayed at Huntsville a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed the park but they showed spots to be level but none of them were. One guy set up but could not get level so he packed up and tried another one. At least when we got there it was almost empty so we tried almost every pot until we found one. Thanks we have been looking at Lake CC

If you are looking for some place a little different from your usual SP's in Texas, I suggest you look into the Sandhills SP in Monahans off of I-20.

We stayed there last July on our way to Northern CA for one night.

As the names suggests, Monahans is in West Texas and there are sand dunes there, but it was clean and the web site offers more things to do besides just looking at sand.

We thought it was pretty in its own way, especially when seeing some kids ride down the dunes.

Spots were great at both parks. There all pull thrus. This weekend I didn't have to use any blocks for the tires or stabilizers and all 5 stabilizers were either on concrete or asphalt. We had two other friends with us and they didnt have any problems either

A couple of years ago my wife and I went to Pedernales Falls SP. Loved it. The site we were in had the fire ring and a second picnic table in almost a second area behind the trailer. So when it came time to relax by the fire you got away from the road just that little bit more and it made a world of difference. Lots of hiking trails as well.

Balmorea was a really nice park. We stayed their a few years ago. The large spring fed pools were really nice and the fish were huge. The kids had a fun time swimming in them. Also try garner state park on the frio river it's a very nice park. Sites were level at both. Birch creek on lake Somerville is a nice park also. If you like to hike or ride bikes Brazos bend state park is good, lots of alligators and birds to see.

We've camped at a Corps of Engineers park at Lake Of The Pines near Jefferson.

AWESOME park! Get space I39 if you can. It has a beautiful deck looking out over the water...nice tall rail around it of course.

The space next to it is a double space, room for two RVs or one RV and multiple vehicles...double deck.

BEAUTIFUL lake also. I've got tons of pictures I've been too lazy to post here.

Great lake for fishing/ski'ing, jet ski'ing or just lazy, slow pontoon boating. They even rent out small pontoon boats, complete with grills for those without a boat.

Which of the four corps parks did you stay in at LOP? Did sites have sewer connection?

Ooops, I forgot there's more than one. I'll have to get back with ya on that (contact our friends who camped with us and live in that area).

No, our site didn't have sewer connections...just a very nice dump station.

IIRC it was on the South shore, but don't quote me on that...east of the dam/spillway. *massive* structure BTW.

DH says it was South shore, come in thru downtown Jefferson...

North thru Marshall, in downtown Jefferson ya go west.

Earls Butts, Earl Burke?

Ahhh...Buckhorn Creek!

Nope, not having a senior moment. Our friends in TX made the reservations.

We used Brushy Creek a couple of times. Has a nice swim beach and we rented a patoon boat across the lake for an afternoon.

Purvis SP south of Canton is also nice. Great fishing pier.

Balmorea is a nice park. Only draw back for me is the lack of shade.

We stayed at Abilene State Park over Labor Day. It has an unbelievable number of huge pecan trees and most of the sites are well shaded. Overall, it is a very nice park. The Pecan Grove area isn't the best for larger travel trailers as the pads are short and some have a steep ramp up to them.

I might not be much help on which camp grounds have the most level sites. We have 3 packs of leveling blocks and about a dozen 2x10x12 treated lumber pieces we carry with us. We've used darn near all of them on a couple of different sites and hardly any on others. Rarely put much thought it in though since we have lots of leveling blocks.

Inks Lake, South Llano River, Caprock Canyon, Davis Mountains (Closed until Feb. 2014) Garner (Very busy) Huntsville and Tyler S.P. are some of our favorites. Many more left to explore so our list is a work in progress.

We stayed at McKinney Falls SP this summer. I would recommend the loop - sites 42-48 I think
Bad thing though it is close to some bad areas and we had 3 bikes stolen while they were locked up at the visitors center. The falls were almost nonexistent with low water level. But most of the sites were pretty level.

We also stayed in site 73 at Guadalupe River SP and it was nice. RV sites are far from the river. Some sites were really really short. There is a great website that has pictures of all the sites. Www.campsitephotos.com. Great park ranger blog too!

Here are some pics.
