Except you pay full ;price, the I-pass cuts the tolls in half.

Jim W, could you take I55 to I355, then down to I80 and East?
Thanks,

Yes you can! You can exit I80 near Joliet where I55 crosses I80. You will be heading towards Chicago IL and than drop down on I355 to route I80.
The reason I mentioned taking I88 instead of I80 is that the I88 route is shorter in the long run than I80 to I55 and than to I355 and back on to I80.

Good luck!

I would also camp somewhere in the Quad cities area. Leaving around 7:00AM you should be able to be in the Chicago area in four or five hours at the most. This should allow you to travel through Chicago/Gary IN area around noon time and be in MI around 2PM eastern time zone. This should allow you to miss the rush hour traffic.

Jim34RL, MY AAA map shows I88 well North of I80. How do connect to I88 off of I80?
Thanks,
Pat K

When you cross into IL on I80 you can choose 88 or stay on 80. In my opinion, 88 gives you many more miles.

I crossed the i80 bridge in in Joliet in my 36bhq to and from KY a couple weeks ago. You'll have to decide if you're willing to take the risk. (FWIW, I know about the reports of the bridge and I might not be very observant but I diddnt see the warning signs when I crossed in either direction.)

If you choose 88, Big Rock Campground (suggested previously) is a good option. No sewer on site, but 2 dump stations and always has spots available.

Good luck.

Hi,

88 and 80 split shortly after crossing the Mississippi River.

And while nobody else has mentioned it, 88 is a much better road surface and has a bit less heavy truck traffic going across the state.

It is a toll, as is 355, while 80 is free. But I live in the area, and 88/355 is always my choice.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Our experience has been that rush hour starts about 6:30 am on the 80/90/94 route in question, and is heavy until late evening.

The big rig truck flow doesn't know rush hours. So unless you love towing surrounded by tall, fast moving trailer bodies, go very early.

FWIW.

Pat, take I196 north just out side of St Jospeh MI. This is the way I travel to Traverse City Mi. also state route 31 connects to I196 up around Holland MI. This is a very good road north which I used to pull my 5ER north when I go up to the Sleeping Bear Dunes. I stay in Empire MI when we are in the area.

Jim W., would you go North on I-55, take Hwy 7 East to I-355 through Crest and Lockport, and then South back down to I-80, and then East?
Thanks Pat K

Pat, no I would not travel on those roads. ILL7 through Lockport is a very narrow road which travels through the downtown. I go that way when I go to my dealer in Frankfort but I travel I-80 and than I357 to I55 and than home with my 5ER.
For myself I would and I will not travel I80 through Joliet. It is not safe regardless what Idot states. They stated the same thing on a major artery in Chicago and the bridge failed closing the road for two days as it was temporarily repaired.

Jim W. thanks for all your help regarding my questions. Looks like I-55 North; and then I-355 South down to I-80 would work to avoid the bridge in Joliet. And then back East on I-80. I see I-355 is a toll road, but that's life. I guess you have to expect it around the Chicago area.
