Trying to avoid traffic around the Chicago area

I'm heading east from South Dakota. I would like to avoid the traffic on Rt i-80 around Chicago. My final destination is I-80 going into Pa.

One mapping system has me taking I-74 to Indy, then on to Columbus Oh then north on I-71 to Arkon to meet up with I-80 to Pa.

Would any recomend route 24 & 224 thru Ind up to I-76 the north to I-80?

Thanks in advance for any options.

Without checking in detail, it seem to me that you add a lot of miles that way. I would drop down to I80 in Nebraska and then just head straight east. If you pass by the Chicago area between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., or after 7 p.m., you shouldn't have much of a delay.

You will be going way out of the way via Indy. There is not that much traffic on 80 to justify that south of a route. 80 is really south of the Chicago traffic. I would work your way to 380 south in Iowa drop down to 80 there and shoot east.

Thanks for the tip, on the map I-80 looked as though it came much closer to Chicago.

We got through this area much eaiser than I thought I would. We went from Rock Island Il to Ohio on I-80 on a Saturday. Not too bad of a drive, thanks for saving me the round-about trip down on 74.

the only part of that leg you will run into heavy traffic is where 80/90/94 all run together near gary indiana. before and after that is good sailing.
