We never camp "up north" until after mid-july because of the biting flies. Horseflies in particular can be maddening.

With the mild winter and heavy rains, this is going to be a banner year for bugs, annoying to their hosts. Plan for the protection now. It will get more expensive and limited in supply as bug season approaches.

That is a lifesaver with the bloodsuckers.....

With the flies.....a breezy day helps and sitting out in the sun. Create your own breeze with a fan wherever you sit.

If you plan 3 weeks in the UP plan ahead as there are city, county and state camping areas to choose from and they can be very differently in price and amenities, especially for non-residents.
Bugs are always smaller than the gator/snake-bait of Fla, in June. Beaches quieter, see may-30-14 photo

This Yooper says DEET helps the case on mosquitos and flies. Rainy weather promotes mosquitos because it helps them hatch. Mosquitos will disappear if it's a dry season. Screened patio tents will allow you to stay outside when the flies are bad. The flies seem to be bad along Lake Superior when it is warm weather. The flies only last a couple of days at a time. Come on up to the U.P. of Michigan!! It's a great place.

We camp in St. Ignace for two weeks every year, mainly for the St. Ignace car show but also to tour the UP on our cycles. We've never had trouble with insects beyond what we normally deal with at any other Michigan State Park. Friends have told us that the mosquitoes at Tequamenon Falls are as big as Volkswagens though.

You can stop at any store and get a couple of these . I haven't used mine yet so can't say if they work.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet or not as I did not read every post, but we use Thermacell products and in particular the lantern. A friend who is a hunter swore by them so we bought a couple of their products and they work great. The mosquitos in MI were really bad last year, but once we setup the lantern on our site picnic table it cleared the whole area. I can't speak to what it does for flies though.

When I was a kid, my folks took us to spend a month (August) in a cabin with no running water or indoor facilities or electricity. It was on a bluff facing east looking out over Lake Michigan on the Garden Peninsula south of Thompson. Dad wanted us to experience what it was like when he grew up on a remote farm in New Brunswich, Canada. What a place! Few insects (the occasional mosquito and nasty deer fly) because of the breezes off of the lake. We would visit the UP State Fair (Escanaba), Tahquamenon Falls, Grand Marais (for the agates), Munising, Marquette, the Soo Locks at Sault Saint Marie. I collected rocks and minerals, and fossils, helped dad pick blueberries, huckleberries, raspberries and blackberries and catch crappies, sunfish and bluegill in some of the lakes. It is a beautiful, wild place that taught me the love of wild places. So much so, that I can no longer live in a big city, only small towns in wild places. If you haven't gone, you should! And don't forget to get some fresh hot pasties while there!

Updating my earlier remarks, I am told that the south boundary road in the Porcupines State Park has the flooding damage repaired and will be open this year. The road has 2-3 feet of snow on it and is open to snowmobiles with fresh snow delivered yesterday.
No bugs today of the insect variety.

in the spirit of the day

elind, The almost mythological snow snake remains as the threat it has been to campers. The cameleon like coloring, white in winter makes them difficult to see unless leaving snowbanks and crossing roadways or paths near shorelines while in pursuit of other non-native invasive species as pictured in 4-1-11 photo on Lake Superior.
