Upper Michigan
We are traveling to th UP in our Georgetown in August. Any advice on roads? I’m a little concerned since it is pretty remote. Going to Macinac, Pictured Rock and Copper Harbor.

We did the UP a few years ago. It was remote for sure but the roads were fine. I would say to keep the gas topped off because there were a few times where we went quite sometime with out seeing a sole.
We laughed that we would drive a 50 miles... Hit a "town" with a laundromat, small gas station (sometimes) and a fire house then with in 100yards be back to nothing until the next firehouse and laundromat! Beutiful area for sure!

Lot's of great rest area/parks between Munising and Marquette. Take your time along that stretch and enjoy. The UP is great and don't forget to buy a Yooper sweatshirt. A mainstay in my wardrobe.

You didn't say if you have a Toad it makes it easier for "Day Trips"! M-28 or US-2 to M-77 North takes you to Grand Maris City RV Park "Woodland Park" on the Shore of Lake Superior, walk 2 blocks to Town,Next Door to "Picture Rocks National Lakeshore"! There are 100s of places to see & Do in the UP! Trip to "Brockway Mountain" is a Must since you are going to Copper Harbor anyway! Youroo!!

Have driven across upper on "2" with 40' fifth wheel. Have never had a problem. If you have time I would check out Tahquamenon falls and Mackinac Island. Michigan is a great state with lots to see. Enjoy

Just returned from Mackinac and up to Munising. Roads were great and fuel stations were plentiful. Have fun and slow down to see the beauty surrounding you. We stayed at the Macinaw/ St Ignaces KOA as our base station and toured from there. Weekdays aren’t to busy but the weekends are a zoo.

Nothing to be concerned over. Did a similar trip last year.
Check out City parks as you travel. Many cities have a park with RV camping. Done are very nice to stay in. Made traveling easy.

We spend five months per year in the UP and you really don't have that much choice. There are only a few roads!

I agree with all of above. Contrary to popular belief (including that of many residents) the major roads up here are in pretty good shape. All of the major highways are paved. Have a great time!

I was up there a year ago. Stayed in Rapid River and did day trips out as far as Pictured Rocks. All the roads were great - better than around where I live.
My normal comment on the UP, stop in L' Anse at the Hilltop Restaurant. Good food and fabulous cinnamon rolls - one is more than enough for 2 people.

We spent about 6 weeks this last fall in the UP and found the roads to be just fine. What a beautiful area with plenty to see and do! We traveled in our 29’ Class C towing a Jeep. We had no problems finding gas, or anything else we needed/wanted. Enjoy!!

We were in the UP twice last year. In the spring we traveled thru on our way to Montana and then home. In the fall we again drove on a partial Great River Road Trip and then home to Tennessee. Both times included a stop at the Hilltop Restaurant for the cinnamon rolls.

What I have heard is the the state of MI distributes road tax $$'s based on square miles of each county, not population. So the roads on the UP are in great shape. And, our experience has been that the UP roads are very good.

The distribution formulas for local and county roads are very complicated; population is one of many factors but not a major one. However, the Michigan Department of Transportation has its own funding stream and maintains the state and federal highways based on statewide need, and those will be the most-used by any visitors!
