What to do in Upper Pennisula of Michigan
Leaving for Wisconsin/Michigan next week....escaping heat of Florida!
We have lots to do in Wis, but any suggestions for Michigan would be greatly appreciated. We plan on being gone a month and would like to take advantage of our time and see as much as possible. Anyone been to Copper Harbour, MI?
Thanks,
Andi

So much to see up there, a few must sees are the fayette ghost town. Its an old mining town. Oswalds bear ranch, and I know the spelling is wrong but kitchitikippi hot springs too. Of course there's always the pictured rocks tour in Munising as well as the souix locks.

Depending on how far east you want to travel in the UP as was mentioned is Fayette State Park, very cool. Then there is Tahquamenon Falls State Park one of many falls in the UP. If you want to go farther east there is Mackinac Island which has many things to see and do. Say ya to da UP !

Not sure what way you are going but the west coast of MI is a great trip. Lots of sandy beaches and great towns to stop and camp. The state camp grounds after Labor day are wide open. If you go west UP Lake in the Clouds is a nice area. You also can go east to De Tour and take the ferry over to Drummond Island. They can take you over with out unhooking and there is some great camping there. If you go to the Soo Anne Osborn camp ground is nice. South of the bridge in Mackinaw City Mill Creek is also nice. Make sure you get a lake view. You can spend a lot of great time traveling this state. I love MI and hope you enjoy your visit.

Thanks for the post. My wife and I are thinking about touring Mich. later this fall. Maybe mid Oct. At least 2 weeks and maybe longer. Depends on what catches our attention.
We plan on starting at South Haven, heading North along the western coast to the Mackinac Bridge and then West along the southern coast. Then return home via the northern and eastern coast. On the way back, we will most likely bypass Detroit. I'm not fond of big cities and pulling a TT doesn't make it any more pleasant.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Holland State Park,Hoffmaster SP in Muskegon,Ludington SP or Vacation Station in Ludington for full hook ups.River Ridge just north of Grand Rapids on the Muskegon river is a very nice RV Park. Further north Petoskey has a very nice RV park and A nice KOA park. Someone will chime in with the name I don't remember it.You will hit the colors about perfect that time of year.If you have time take a trip to Mackanaw Island. It's a nice day trip. Be sure to rent a horse and buggy to tour the island or you can bike if you like. Lots to do here and great camping. I love it when all the kids go back to school. Nice and quite State Parks.

Looks like a lot of good info, we are headed for Sault Ste. Marie MI Labor day for about 10 days, staying at Aune Osborn along the St. Marys River. We will try and use some of this info.

Lots of Casinos with RV parks and fly fishing for trout in the UP. Other types of fishing as well. I love the area so much that I have a RV lot that I own in Cedarville. I look forward to spending many summers and early fall there. Gods Country. You can easly avoid Detroit but to see the Tigers play the Yankees in Detroit would be nice.

Spend a little time watching the boats go thru the Soo Locks, Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, Tach and Bond Falls. On the east side if you go up the Keweenaw pennsula, there are alot of copper mining related stuff, light houses and at the end, An old fort (can't read the neme with my present glasses).

I like to visit Munising Michigan. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on the shore of Lake Superior is very nearby. Munising has an older municipal campground that is right on the shore of Lake Superior. It wouldn't be allowed that close any more but it is grandfathered in. It has 30 amp electric and water. There is a dump staion on the grounds also.
If you happen to be a scuba diver, there is good wreck diving out of Munising. There is a variety of wrecks and they are not too deep.
I was just at the Whitefish Point lighthouse and Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. It was interesting but a long way from anywhere.
I visited Sault St Marie last year and found the lock system very interesting. If you hit that, you may want to hit Whitefishpoint as you start your journey east.
Happy camping!

That is so true and that is what I like about it also.
If you make it East just before Superior Wisc. you can head north to Bayfield and the Apostle Islands. A very popular area.
