I checked on coverage between ATT and Verizon and for phone use it is a toss up. At one time GM used Verizon on OnStar and I dropped that feature due to bad coverage on remote areas of Interstate in northern MS an lower marsh lands of LA. However, if you need data, Verizon had the best deal for data share off the phone. Verizon lets you turn the sharing on at a thirty day rate, works great for a friend on ours who has a DW with a wifi IPAd to use while traveling. The last I checked, 6 months ago, ATT wanted you to lock into a one or two year contract for rate that was similar to Verizon's month at a time rate. Felt like that was a double dip once they pushed into a higher data plan as well. Am looking at changing DWs phone from ATT for that feature.

Can't speak for data; since I use less than 1gb a month (way less). So my single line, with unlimited text and calls, which is 20 less than Verizon is not a great example. I primarily look for phone usage. However, my truck is a hot spot via AT&T and so far not bad. I'm on a monthly with them for the data hot spot and I'll see how it is during the summer months.

Verizon has a very nice feature in regards to their "mobile hot spot". (Others may have it too.) Ordinarily, it is $20 a month extra on top of my regular $30 service for my iPhone. Rather than just sign up for the permanent mobile hot spot charge, I can go on the Verizon web site and turn the feature on and off whenever I go traveling. The hot spot is absolutely essential for camping where there is no Wi-Fi or the RV campsite one is of poor quality or stretched to capacity. I don't even use Wi-Fi any more while camping...just the mobile hot spot. How sweet it is!

If you want the best chance of coverage in remoter areas, Verizon is the only way to go.

Looks like I'll stick with Verizon. I had already checked coverage maps, but I have been skeptical about them for a while. I have a Samsung GIII so I can just turn on the hot spot when I need the data for the work computer. Years ago I had Sprint and traveled in west Texas for business...what a joke! No service from Abilene to Midland, and the phone would actually overheat because of the battery strain. Couldn't get or receive a call at all.

WE have had the best luck with Verizon when travelling Western New York , Florida , Arizona. Beware of the likes of "Straight talk" on the Verizon network thru Walmart. When they talk about the strength of the Verizon network from coast to coast, they neglect to mention they do not guarantee ANY SERVICE outside of the area where the phone was activated.

If you are a Canadian travelling in the US I highly recommend Roam Mobility. They have voice and text only packages or you can also get data. You pay in Canadian dollars and it is a fraction of the cost of roaming. They have specific deals for snowbirds that even include a phone or you can use your own unlocked phone with their sim card. I have one of these and found it to work very well everywhere from Michigan to Florida. More details at www.roammobility.com

We've traveled from Iowa to west coast, to east coast, Florida to New England and back. We have AT&T and my wife has to be connected all the time due to working from home (or motorhome). We were concerned about AT&T, but is has never failed us. So we are not switching to an other carrier. JMHO.

I'm guessing that you stayed on major arteries? Just about anything works if you stay on major highways and metro areas.

We did stay on major highways most of the time, but also strayed off on smaller roads in rural areas, as well. Only once in the mountains of West Virginia did we lose connection for about 10 mins. Other than that, we had phone and Hot Spot connections in all our travels. Maybe lucky??
