Wisconsin to Mt. Rushmore

Next Memorial Day week we are planning on traveling from Wisconsin to Mt. Rushmore. Anyone have any ideas on where we should stay on the way for one night?

I use RV Park Reviews to find camp grounds on my way to where ever we are going. I usually drive between 300 to 350 miles a day so than I can locate a campground that is some what close to this distance and not to far off of the beaten path. I usually request pull thru-sites with full hook-ups so I do not have to un-hitch the 5er. Just drop the legs down and plug in the electric and hook up the water and sewer.

Thank you. We are going to try to drive from Lake Michigan to about Fairmont MN. This would be about a 6 to 7 hour drive. In turn, it would leave us with a 7 hour drive the next day to get us to our destination.

Wife and I were supposed to leave next Thursday for Rushmore but had to cancel due to business interference. Being self employed isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Do you have a place you're staying once you get there? We were going to stay here. Big Pine Campground Custer South Dakota came highly recommended and looks very nice.
Enjoy your trip everyone I have talked to say it's awesome.

If you are going west on I-90 there is a neat little park in Presho, SD. Ai'nt much of a town but this park is pretty nice and puts you in easy reach of Rushmore the next day. Of course you will need to stop at Wall Drug on the way. We have stayed at the Custer KOA and while a pretty busy place it was allright.

We stayed at a KOA in Jackson, MN. Not far from Fairmont. It was a typical KOA.

Also a nice municipal park in Adrian, MN. A little farther but should be manageable.

Last year on our way to Rushmore we stayed at the Sioux Falls, SD KOA, just off I-90. At Rushmore we stayed at the Rafter Bar J Ranch. These worked for us.

TeePee Campground was mid-way between Rapid City and Mt Rushmore. I've stayed there twice and was happy. NOTE: I haven't been there the last two years and, back then, the owner was looking to sell the property.

In the Mt Rushmore area, Take a ride on Needles Hwy if your vehicle will fit.

From western Wisconsin on I-90, it's an easy day's drive to Chamberlain. Get there early afternoon. We stayed at Cedar Shores Campground. Next day it's a short half day drive to the Black Hills. Coming back, nice day drive to Adrian, MN Municipal campground. Very nice campground. Again, it's an easy drive home from there.

For us it looks to be, according to google maps, about 6.5 hours to Fairmount MN (390 miles). From Fairmount MN to mount Rushmore, again according to google maps, 7 hours of driving (480 miles). This does not include stops. We are thinking stops every 2.5 hours in the truck.

Wi to rusmore

We went this year and stayed at Sioux Falls KOA, exactly half way to Rushmore from the Madison area. Not fancy but right near the highway and easy to get to. We stayed at Rafter Bar J campground which is about 10 minutes from rushmore and 5 minutes from Crazy Horse. It was a very nice place to camp, highly recommend them. Don't forget to go see the falls when you are in Sioux Falls, it's very worth seeing. Have fun there is a lot of fun stuff to see in the area around Custer.

There is a lot to see in the area. If you can spare an extra day, and haven't in the past, another idea would be to try and stop at Wall. It will make for an easier travel day and allow you to get into the Black Hills/Rushmore area early in the day instead of in the evening. From Wall you can visit Wall drug. It is a tourist trap but still fun to stop and see. The Badlands are very worth seeing and only minutes away. There is a decent full hook-up campground right behind Wall drug called Sleepy Hollow.

Hey Skis, you'll have to document your trip. I'll be heading out about a month after you. Once out of WI, it's mostly the same route. It would be great to hear about someone else's experience so close to our own trip. This will be my first time out of WI. I hear it's a great trip, have fun!

Be sure, if you can, to be at Rushmore for the evening lighting show. It is great, with a nice audio program about the history of Rushmore. It is a very patriotic, flag waving event. We loved it!🇺🇸
