World largest Electric Shovel and RV park

Odd as a Cod....got detoured this week due to road work while traveling through SE Kansas and stumbled upon Big Brutus. there are also RV hook ups in case you want to bask in the glow of over 11 million lbs of steel. It's worth stoping only if you are in the area. Most of the guts if this monster were scrapped and sold. West Mineral Kansas....

This is Mrs. Old Car. My children's great-grandfather worked in the coal mines in West Mineral during the 30's, 40's and early 50's. We spent many weekend's there when the kids were young and have camped in the shadow of Big Brutus many times. Before the museum went in you used to be able to climb to the top of the shovel and could see for many miles. Due to liability issues, they won't let you do that anymore. We would swim and fish in the many strip pits in the area.

Mrs old car...that's great! It appears Brutus may have painted himself into a corner...he just became too much to operate. The sign for the boom is still there....I snuck up and took a picture of the ladder. Great price of roadside history....a bit off the Path but worth a look. I really would have liked to see it with everything installed such as the motors and all the electrical components...but those must have been sold off for the copper. He really left his mark on that area!

My son is 25 and it used to be when you turned 12 you were allowed to go up the ladder to the top of the shovel with an adult. We took him up and then when his sister turned 12 three years later they had closed it off and she was really disappointed.
