3171 hot water heater bypass valves

Where are the bypass valves for the atwood hot water heater. Working on winterizing our unit now. None of the manuals we received when purchased show anything about the plumbing. Thx, Ben

They are usually right behind the hot water heater, so locate the heater on the outside of the MH then go inside and look for a removeable panel. In our 2300 you had to pick up the mattress and unscrew a deck plate. In our new 2700DS there is a removeable panel below the fridge.

In our 2401R there's a "removable" panel (with screws - nuts) but if you pull out the drawer above it you can get at the controls just fine. Look for some easy way in before unscrewing things as a last resort. If they are behind a screwed panel, you may want to change the setup because the screw holes won't last more than a couple of shots. They really need to make these usable.

You need to remove at a minimum one, maybe both of the kitchen drawers under the sink. I was able to just remove the top drawer and slide my arm down to reach them.

On my Mirada, they are located behind one of the closet drawers.

I had to repair a broken valve, so replaced all of them with the shark teeth push on valves.

Ben, are you using antifreeze? Why not just blow out with air?

When the condensation formed from blowing out with air settles at al low connection the plastic connector will freeze and crack. the pex lines won't crack but the connector will. I know we fix plenty of them in the spring.

Steve, we used the air method and have been in the past with our old Winnie Minnie. Just thought by shutting off the bypass to the hot water heater it might make things easier and quicker getting all the water out of the lines in the MH and outside shower. Should I worry about this or not?

Just a thought. If you have panels that are held by wood screws, you can go to a hardware store and get threaded inserts to put in the wood and a machine screw to hold the panel closed. Works like a dream.
