5 Star Tuning is going mainstream?

There's an article in the May edition of Motorhome Magazine, "5 Star Tuning Talk," that is very pro 5 Star. I'm used to these magazines supporting their advertisers, but in this case they published their methods and their data. Their results indicate that 5 Star delivers better engine performance. They also cited federal law that just having it doesn't invalidate your warranty.

I found it interesting that a mainstream publication would be so forthright with a controversial subject like after-market engine tuning. If the gizmo works, and there is no realistic threat of warranty issues, why is engine tuning under such a cloud?

I noticed that in the reported results gas mileage went down. I'm interested in the transmission improvements but don't really want LESS gas mileage.

That's usually the fault of the driver!

There is a law on the books which states that an aftermarket component added to your vehicle will not void your warranty BUT, here's where it gets tricky! When a performance company like 5 Star reflashes your vehicles ECU/ECM they are defeating the current programming that was designed by the manufacture and approved by the EPA (CARB too if you live in California). This is where the law gets broken and the car manufacture can turn the tables against you. I owned a Tuning Center for years and had to deal with this very issue. I even had the EPA visit me one day to try to find evidence that I was breaking their laws by "defeating" EPA approved emission systems on vehicles. The bottom line is this: it's your vehicle to do with as you choose, But your vehicle manufacture can tell by plugging into your vehicle ECU/ECM with a computer to determine if the programming checksum has been altered. Once altered, it can't be corrected, therefore, leaving you at the mercy of the manufacture. I for one, have spent too much money on my FR, to have the Ford MC to tell me my drivetrain warranty is null and void!

I have it on our 2012 Lexington, and wouldn't be without it. Hugh improvement in tranny shifting. Does make a bit more HP. Fuel usage will remain about the same...you'll use a bit more as it takes more fuel to make HP, but you'll save a bit cause your rig, when going up a lot of grades, will now drop into 4th gear, instead of the "screaming 3rd" gear which causes revs to go way up.
Besides, if your that worried about a tenth or two less gas milage per gallon, well then, get a Prius and buy a tent.
Those of you who are skeptical...nothing will change your mind, and you can argue against it all day long.
Then there are those of us who have it, love it, and wouldn't be without it.

Grumpy, done a lot of reading on the 5 star. Is it really that easy to install?

It is super simple to install. Programmer plugs into the OB port. Follow the instructions and prompts. Takes about 7-10 minutes for it to download and thats it.
Go to the IRV2 Forums, and under the Vendor Spotlight section you'll find hundreds of posts about the 5 Star. Also, from time to time, 5 Star runs a special discount on that forum.

If you buy the 5 star tuning system, is only good for one vehicle or can it be used on 2, 3, 4, etc. vehicles?
