Atwood A/C Continuous Run

Every unit I’ve previously owned had air conditioners that shut off when the temperature reached the selected value. Best I recall is when the correct temperature was sensed the compressor would stop and about 30 seconds or less later the fan would stop.

I have the 15k Atwood unit on my 3051 that doesn’t work like that. Even with the fan selected to auto it will continue to run after the set temperature is reached. The only thing that quits running is the compressor. The only way to stop the fan is to shut the entire system down.

Also, during auto operation and while the compressor is engaged, the fan speeds change from high to low...and sometimes settle on medium.

Does this indicate something not right or is it normal for this model?

This is a Forest River product. Why would you think they would supply an owners manual? At least they provided an installation manual.

Don’t know what good an owners manual would do. The only choices are auto with a continuously running fan with various speeds or manual fan with a set speed.

I got an owners manual with both of my FR's. If you didn't get one, google it. You can usually find PDF's of owners manuals on-line.

Most installation manuals have the operation manual included. Locate the model number of the ac and look it up on your favorite search software (ex. Bing, Duck-Duck-Go or Google).

1. Get a copy of the THERMOSTAT manual.

2. Compare your operation with that described in the manual.

3. Do a reset if something is not as described. (Being microprocessor controlled, you will probably need resets from time-to-time.)

Some interesting discussion on Dometic crazy thermostat operation:

A/C cycles.....

There are many 15k Atwood A/C units. If you have the AC1511w or b then it is working normally. The 1511 is the ducted heat pump model.

I have been a rv owner for over 52 years and this Atwood POS is the worst thing I have ever bought. Customer service is the worse of any company I have ever dealt with. they are clueless about the products. that they should be experts about.

Dometic units shut down entirely at desired temp. Not sure about Atwood's.

My Atwood duct model AC evaporator fan runs continuously when the unit is set to cool. The outside condenser fan and the compressor shut down when the thermostat is not calling for cooling. Atwood now uses separate condenser and evaporator fans. Otherwise the evaporator fan runs continuously when the thermostat is set to cool. By running only the evaporator fan, the unit uses little power to keep the air circulating so it does not become stratified, hot at the top and cold at the bottom of a coach and air flow over the evaporate coil helps dry it so mold and mildew don't grow causing odors and health issues. The newer duct type Atwood units are very quiet and when used in the auto fan position, the fan speed will drop to low as the thermostat is satisfied.

my fan never shuts off whether in heat pump or A/C modes even with fan in automatic. Atwood says it is designed to work that way

That may not be completely accurate Bob. In heat pump mode and fan on auto the AC1511 shuts off. It just does not stay off. Comes back on every couple of minutes to “sample” the air temp.

I can assure you it is true.....the Atwood dealer that installed it had it 4 days and nifor ghts working on it with Atwood and they claim in heat pump mode it is designed to run about 2 minutes then the compressor shuts down. The fan continues to run about 5 minutes later the compressor will come on again for 2 minutes and. on an on never satisfying the thermostat

Then if you have a AC1511 something is wrong and you were given a “story”.

Even though the link does read 1511 the manual is for two other non ducted models. Go figure.

I didn't notice that; too trusting, I guess.

Seems like someone should have the manual.
