The coach batteries do charge while driving. There is a diode assembly that only allows power to run one way, from the alternator to all the batteries, but not the other way. I think the reasoning is that if you kill the coach batteries you still have the chassis battery to be able to start the engine. In most cases there is an override button that will allow you to use the coach batteries to help start the engine if something happens to the chassis battery.
