Flagstaff to Phoenix

We are just leaving the south rim of the Grand Canyon and heading for Flagstaff. I would like anyones advice on route I 17 south? I don't see much of an alternate route. I've read diferent opinions about long uphills and downhills. We're driving the 24 ft. Forrester, 6.0 liter.
Thanks

Major Highway

Major highway, best/fastest route down to Phoenix, mostly down hill.

Should take about 1.25 to 1.5 hours. Can be congested at the 17/10 interchange. There is indeed a rush hour in Phoenix and 17 is major N/S route.

I live in Payson AZ. Half way between Flag & Phoenix at 5000 feet. There are other more scenic routes but are longer.

You will be going from 7000 feet to 1100 feet, so yes there will be some downhills. 17 is a good road and has RV's and trucks on it daily. You will have no problems.

My son is at NAU and we're in Phx so I make the drive many times. I always google map it. If there are any accidents on the I-17, it can be a major delay, in which case I take the scenic drive going from Flagstaff along Lake Mary Road, into Payson, then past Saguaro lake, and into Mesa/Phoenix. Most times this is 30 min longer than taking I-17, but if there is a major accident, I have sat on I-17 for 2 hours. Enjoy your drive.

Opening this thread, I knew it had to be one of two things..... driving directions or trading a FR Flagstaff for a Shasta Phoenix. Sorry couldn't resist.
