Forester 3051S, what size of Anode rod

This may sound like a dumb question, but what size of anode rod should be in the water heater in the Foresters?

The one I just took out is 4 1/2 inches long and has a 3/4 inch thread.

Seems very short.... should it have the 9 inch anode?

Measure how deep the tank is and buy/cut as needed.

Your profile says 2016 Forester. As far as I remember 2016 Forester's have an Atwood water heater with aluminum tank. That does not require an anode rod. Do you have a suburban water heater?

No, it has an Atwood water heater. The anode I just removed is well worn which indicates to me that it should have one.

Atwood water heaters do not use anode rods. Why one would be in your water heater I have no idea. Atwood heater should only have a plastic plug.

I replaced our shorter one with a 9". Works just fine.

The following is directly taken from Atwood website, "Your Atwood Water Heater is made of a special aluminum alloy that does not require the use of an anode rod. Even though there are people who may tell you an anode rod is required you should not use one in our product it can actually harm the tank and would not be beneficial. If you are under warranty adding an anode rod will void your warranty.*"

I agree, no anode in Atwood water heaters. Our 2016 Forester is two years old now and the Atwood water heater has worked flawlessly without an anode. We just have a white plastic plug, which is removed when draining .

Biker,

You may be using the wrong terminology. Attwood heaters only having a "heating element" and not an "anode". I recently replaced my failed heating element on my 6 gal Attwood water heater with this model. it is a little longer than the original but has the same 1400 watt rating.
