Only problem is voltage display in an often overheated, corroded outlet will not reveal the voltage "drop" when load is applied. Suspect that is what happened to the op. More accurate is measure down stream beyond the oft defective 30 amp recept. Use a table lamp as a immediate telltale of power availability.
Sounds as though after he connected, the plug heated and voltage dropped.
Happened to me in popular, overused campsites.

To me this sounds like the 12V was not turned on. Ours will only charge in the on position. The 12V runs fridge, TV some lights etc. the batteries will drain if not charged.

Correct. Batteries will only charge if the disconnect is on (to the right). We've asked the convertor people if we can connect the charge line straight to the batteries (not through the disconnect)
