So we registered our Forester with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles earlier this week and took it to the Chevy dealer for the required annual inspection today. My husband drove the motor home and I followed in the truck since we were going to leave the motor home at the dealers and come back and pick it up when the inspection was complete. While following him I noticed that the Forester does not have a light over the rear license plate. I thought a light was required over the plate for all vehicles. I did a preliminary internet search but couldn't find anything definitive. Does anyone know for sure?
dont know much about motor homes, but on tt's and 5th wheels most license plates are off to the side under a break light/running light and that shines down on the plate killing two birds with one stone.
I believe, but am not certain, that all states require this light.
Having said that, does anyone really think that tiny little bulb provides enough illumination to enable anyone to read the plate number other than when you're standing next to it at night?
Our last motor home had a license plate frame and light similar to the second picture. The light on the Forester is a section of clear plastic on the bottom side of the tail light as shown in the first picture. I did not think to look under there.
Yes it's the law. All inspections are for is to generate $$$! What a waste.

P.S. We passed the inspection.
Off subject but,,, what bread is your cute little dog ???
Kind of off subject too, but here in Pa, we will no longer get renewal stickers for on our license plate. Only thing we get is a new owners' card. It will save the state about .02 cents, but I would imagine all police departments will have to buy some sort of scanner to hit you with while you drive by at a cost far larger than the savings from no sticker.

Already doing that here in Western PA.
Three people I know were already scanned (optical recognition) and hit with hefty fines within two days of their registration having expired. We no longer get any kind of mail notice. You are just supposed to know. Renewal all done online and registration card printed off web site.

For the safety part of the inspection, light motor vehicles with a maximum gross weight under 10,001 are $10 and vehicles with a MGW over 10,000 and under 18,001 are $15 (this is what ours cost). There is also an emissions inspection for vehicles older than 2 years that costs $21 in the New York City Metropolitan area and $11 elsewhere in the state.
These inspections do help ensure that vehicles are safe to operate. It's good to know your brakes need replacing from the inspection versus when you try to stop and they don't work.

It's not really a waste. My BIL is an independent mechanic and does the PA yearly inspections. Believe me you do not want to be anywhere on the road around some of the vehicles he has to reject. Brakes metal to metal, cords showing on tires, etc. Add to that what we see here in western PA with people commuting into the Pgh area from OH where they have no inspections. You see some real doosies.
The one thing we have in certain counties (surrounding larger irban areas) is an emissions inspection. I feel that is money grubbing govt mandated BS but luckily I am in a county where it's not required.
Very funny Kenny !!!
Maybe I should ask what Breed it was ???
Kayley is a shih tzu and weighs 11 pounds. A great, compact size for camping! We had never had a shih tzu before (we had cocker spaniels) but we couldn't be happier with her!
