How did you get the radio/DVD player out of the wall to check the cables?

I used a small screwdriver to release two tabs on each side of the radio, allowing me to remove the side panels. That exposed the screws that attach the radio to the cabinet. After removing four screws, the radio can be slid out and wiring exposed. You might need someone to hold onto the radio while you check the wiring.

My bag of manuals, cables and remotes had these tools for radio removal. Just remove the face plate and insert on side of radio and pull out the radio. I also have access in back of my sofa to the subwoofer and radio/player. But again, I couldn't read the wiring diagram on the radio's top.
Kjcachers, you should have the same setup as mine. If you unbolt the sofa back you should have access to the back of the radio under the black plastic shroud.
While you have access to the back of the radio/player, take a look at my post#14 here and note in the photo the 4 blue wire nuts. Those are the rewiring I did for the outdoor speakers to come from this radio rather than my dash radio. Those gray wires had been cut off the harness and mine were for the front speakers. Others have the reverse and the back wires are cut. If you use the fader on the radio, you will note that either one or the other has no speakers attached.

So does your fader work only on front only or back only? Maybe only right or left balance?
