Metal valve stems on Jeep toad for TPMS

Getting the Wrangler ready to use as a toad and I’m wondering what other folks have done as far as mounting sensors on tires. My tire guy said he doesn’t have metal stems that fit Jeep tires but he does have some that are 90pct brass. I know manufacturer says to mount only on metal. Anybody run into this?

I had an in depth conversation with the folks at GreatRVProducts on this subject. Although the manufacturer does recommend metal valve stems, some folks were using the lightweight cap sensors on short, heavy duty (mostly brass) stems. The caveat was that the stems were new(er) and very, very short.

So do you have stock Jeep wheels?

Yes they are stock and it’s a 2013 Wrangler. Actually just got back from s different tire shop where I had scheduled an appointment to have metal stems put on. Guy there informed me that replacing the stems would also disable my tire pressure monitoring that comes on the Jeep, since the stock stem and sending unit are connected. The stems are pretty short and there’s not a lot of wiggle room between the stem and the wheel so he gave me a bunch of rubber spacers that they put in some wheels to stabilize the stems. Guess I’ll try that.

Brass is a metal made from a blend of copper and zinc. If the valve stems your tire guy is talking about is all brass and not brass threads fused to rubber like regular valve stems, you will be fine. Your integrated pressure monitoring system will be disabled.

One thing I’d like to add; If you put tpms cap sensors on, be aware that you need to use the sensors with similar metal to your threads or you can get into a serious corrosion situation.

I have a TPMS system and only use the sensors on my Subaru when it is actually being towed. The standard stems seem to be fine so far after two seasons of towing.

Yes that was my plan also, only have them on when it’s in tow.

I do not think that you must have metal stems unless you are going to use flow thru sensors !!! Use Cap sensors and remove the Anti-Theft Cap !!!

The '90pct' valve stems that the 'tire guy' has is a High Pressure valve stem. I have them on my tow vehicle and camper and have TPMs on all wheels (cap style)(TV,RV). the valve stems work very good. Metal valve stems will not fit on any of my custom wheels (TV,RV), so I went will the High Pressure stems.
