Minor damage to new 3010DS - Lessons Learned

The storage compartment doors on our MH unlatch at the top and swing down. I am constantly ragging on the wife to get what she wants, and then close and latch them. She tells me Iím anal and my OCD is a little over the top sometimes.

Came up in the mountains to camp for few days yesterday and started setting up the coach to level and get the slides set. While auto leveling, she decided to help and get out chocks and stuff. Yep, left door open and hanging down on ground. Jacks raised front and lowered back, crushed the door, bent framework and blew hinges off.

She said Ooops, I was smart enough to say nothing, but I did start drinking before noon. Guess I will learn body work when I get home!! Be careful of doors.

At some point during every day you suddenly realize nothing else productive is going to happen the rest of that day. For me, it usually occurs around 9 am.

The rear door under my bedroom slide opens upward and there is a latch to hold it open. I forgot to close it before putting the slide in and it crushed the door at the locking mechanism a little bit. Just cosmetic but was quite irritating. I haven't done it since so hopefully I learned my lesson.

gmacklem, I did the exact same thing on our last trip out to our 2018 Forester 2861DS. Just appears to be some surface cracking around the latch.

storage doors

3010DS, had the rear door open under bslad and when tried to close it was hung on ground, raised rear jack to close , but no damage. What is it with every storage lock having the key inserted differently?

The key insertion orientation will take you just an adjustable wrench (Crescent wrench), a screwdriver and a few minutes time to fix.

The locking tab can be attached to the cylinder in any of four orientations. The lock barrel can be installed through the baggage door in any of four orientations.
  • Using the screwdriver, remove the locking tab and set it aside.
  • Using the adjustable wrench, remove the lock assembly. Re-install it in the preferred orientation and tighten with the wrench. (Use the key to test locked-unlocked positions to make sure it's where you want it.)
  • Re-install the locking tab so it locks when the key is turned. Tighten with the screwdriver.

Re: Door Cable Holders - I like this concept but doesn't that make reaching into the bay a bit tougher, particularly in the back corners?

Just use an openable hook

Make sure that part of the cable setup includes an openable hook for those rare instances. Maybe one like this:

or maybe just a small carabiner.

Drilled out all the pop rivets, removed hinges, and straightened the hinge pins. Three pound hammer to straighten out the door casing and more and longer retaining screws in the outer frame. Door is a little snug and needs an assist to close, but fits flat in the frame, and latches and locks OK. Little touch up paint and we will be good.

Could have been a lot worse.
