Mounting a TV

I have a question about mounting a TV in my 2005 Forester. It comes with two cutout boxes for older style TV's that were more boxy. It has a strap that was to be used to secure the TV. I want to use a Flat screen TV in the "box" that is a part of my kitchen cabinets but when I used my Zircon Stud Sensor e50, which works great in my house, but when I tried it in the two "Boxes" the other one is built into the bedroom closets, it did not detect any studs. I'm considering using a TV mount that I could bolt to the cabinets, but I'm wondering what others have done with this type of set up to use a flat screen TV. Thanks in advance.
