Onan Generator Gasoline odor?
2013 Forester #3051
I just ran my Onan generator for one hour under-load. After the generator is shut-off, I get a slight gasoline odor inside my RV living area. This has happened the last two times I ran the generator for one hour each. Removing the generator cover and checking with no sign of gasoline leaks. But, I need some information on the fuel pump and it's location. This maybe the source of my problem. Any ideas.
BTW...I am still camping in the North Carolina Mountains until November 1st.

I have a 2014 2900 and experienced the same issue with the raw gasoline odor. Dealer told me it's a "gas engine" and could not find problem. I'm a firefighter, so I was perfectly aware that it's a gas engine, however raw gas odor= bad news. After several more hours of use, the fuel pump failed. Find an authorized Onan service center on the Onan website and they will take care of it. There was a bad batch of fuel pumps that were put on 13/14 generators. The second pump even failed a few weeks later on the road. Took it to another Onan service center and they replaced it again, all under warranty. So far, so good.

I remember reading about problems with some new Onan generators. My carburetor seems find but I could not locate the fuel pump. Anyway, I will call an Onan Service Center when I get home in November.
Thx...

I'm a fairly handy person so I watched him fix it. You have to remove a wiring harness on the left lower front behind the cover. Then it's located pretty far back on the left side, bottom of gen. It did look like a booger to get too.

Had mine replaced under warranty last month. Found them on line for about $85.00 and some aftermarket pumps.
Location.
Tucked in behind the module. I figure, unbolt the module to gain access.
Breaker. Forward is on. Just a little extra.

Thanks for posting photos of the fuel pump location. My RV is under the manufactures warranty until April of 2014. Then my Good Sam Extended Warranty takes over for 4 years with a $100.00 deductible.
Question: has Onan upgraded the defective fuel pumps or do they just keep replacing them with another?
BTW...if the pump is located behind the 30amp breaker then it is not on the left side of the generator but more in the center.

sorry for the confusion. The breaker is located to the right and down low of the prime/start button. You can't see on and off.
Just checked my new fuel pump. Part numbers are the same. Was hoping for a revision to the part number. The pump is a silver instead of gold color and an additional sticker. Going on color only and very limited knowledge, I assume it is a pump of a different lot.
New pump.

I was told there was a revision, or supplier change and they have been updated. Also, I'm pretty sure the Onan warranty period is longer than Forester. 2 yrs. I believe.

Oh, and i would assume that many RV dealers may the older pumps left over, that's why I went directly to Onan.

I did not go to the dealer. Called and was told to take it to an Onan service centre. Found Tony's RV parts and service in Lexington, SC. they ordered the pump from Onan . I asked if they stocked them. He stayed that they did not however, they had ordered 5 pumps as they had 5 coaches to repair. So far so good and yes two year warranty.

Cummins Onan Service
I took my 2013 Forester to Cummins South of Fort Myers, FL for generator service today. It was becoming more difficult to start and gave off a raw gasoline odor inside the coach when stopped.
Both the carburetor and fuel pump were replaced costing $585.00 for parts and labor. The generator only has 16.7 hours on it and repairs were covered by the Onan warranty. BTW...I took delivery of the RV in April 2013.
My next RV trip is January to Avon Park, Florida.

Great that the Onan warranty covers these problems however it stinks, at least in 2012 when I ordered my Sunseeker, it was a $560 option over the Genrac. Sticking with a Genrac turned out to be a good choice.
