Onan generator -- Oil Filter ??

Time for the first oil change (20hrs). Looking at the manual I can't find any indication that there is an oil filter for the Onan 4.0kw generator. Manual says to change the oil but no mention of a filter.... ??? Hmmm

Am I missing something??

Help and suggestions appreciated.

The Onan 4k does not have an oil filter. Very simple process. Drain oil using drain plug on bottom of unit. Replace drain plug and refill with 1.6 quarts of oil. Done.

WOW, now that's fast reply. THANK YOU.
I do figure you had minor typo as manual says 1.6 qt of oil (not 2.6) but again thanks.

due to temp spread here in Oregon was going to use 15w-40 (per manual).

Why is that? Not prohibited per the manual.

20Hrs, not sure about that one. I changed mine at 150 and the oil looked fine. 15/40w is what I used and haven't had any issues.

Oman manual page 29 calls for initial oil change at 20 hours the every 150 hours after that.

I hope that the dealer did it, but most likely not. It runs great and I run Marvels Mystery Oil in the gas and put about 3 Oz's in the oil at the change.

I run 30w, but I'm in Florida. In cooler climates, 10w40 might be better. Don't forget to add Sta-Bil to your gas and run the gennie every couple of weeks.

If you have not changed the oil yet, pour slowly.

Since there is no oil filter, the only way to get dirt out is by draining the oil. Changing oil is a very inexpensive way to prolong the life of a hard working engine.

I think the worst thing is that it has a carb. and when you stop running it for awhile the gas starts to go bad no matter if you use sta-bil or not. Since we have a 55 gallon gas tank pouring sta-bil in it isn't going to do much. I don't usually leave a full tank in the RV but over a 1/4 so I can run the generator time to time while in storage.

Note - the generator will not be able to pull fuel from the gas tank right at about 1/4 tank. (depending on the level of RV) This is by design so that the genset can never deplete the gas tank fully and leave you stranded. I go with no more than 1/2 tank for winter storage since my storage space is slanted towards the rear.

Funny thing is how I found out. Our old RV, I was at Home Depot and left the Gen on and when I came out it was off. So I called the dealer and they asked me how much gas was in it (less than 1/4) and when I filled it up it work fine. It was a used RV and our first, the guy that went over it might have told us it, but so much stuff you don't remember it all. Glad it was near home and not out bonedocking.
