Propane tank crack and leak.

I have noticed a propane smell coming from for 2013 Sunseeker since I bought it this past August. The dealer has replaced the valves under his warranty several times.

At my last visit for this problem they decided or discovered that there is a crack in my propane tank so they ordered a new one. I was told all the hardware will also be replaced.

It was always a very slight smell propane until the day I turned on my heater. When I exited the RV there was a heavy smell of propane in the area. Glad I quit smoking before that.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Be Well,

Bobby

Sure haven't but since that is a fixed tank its approved by ASME. You might report the fault to NHTSA as that could have had fatal consequences. "Safety failures like that should be investigated. You can google NHTSA by their name and file a report on line.

Thanks. I will consider that. However, I suspect that this crack occurred sometime after the RV was put into service and may have been caused by a filling station or mechanic. I don't think FR is responsible. I also suspect that may be why my RV was traded in by the previous owner.

Was kinda thinking of the tank mfg. Its supposed to be able to withstand "rough service" including filling, temp changes and road service. That's pretty scary to fail like that. Manchester is the big US maker, not surprised if they are Oriental now days. Good luck with it!

The tank should not fail when being filled. If the LP pump developed more pressure than the tank rating, the pressure relief valve should open. Also, if the tank was over filled and heat caused the pressure to go up, the relief valve should open.

You have a defective tank. You should report it. Include the tank serial number in your report.

You should report it just in case there may be a recall on it or needs to be.

I bought my sunseeker 3050 in janaury. Entire tank had to be replaced in July due to a hole in the bottom of it. There is no protection underneath it from road debris.

I had the same problem with a 20 lb tank at home after filling. Not sure what caused the problem, didn't think to report it.

Can't think how a mechanic could split tank also the relief valve would have been howling but replacing tank shouldn't be a big deal

I have nothing to contribute other than I saw your user name, Delco Bobby. I grew in in media, upper Providence actually. My parents still live off old state and Crum Creek.

Should definitely be reported, just think how you will feel if in a few months you read about a disaster involving this, it does no harm to you or FR but can sure save lives.

There have been many reports of bad regulators leaking (mine did). Simple replacement fixed it. Do you smell propane when tank is turned off? A leaking tank would smell all the time. A leaking regulator would smell only when propane is turned on. Also can use soapy water or propane leak detector to check exact location of leak.

I smell propane all of the time when the valve is closed. The only time that I had the valve open to run the heater there was a much heavier smell of propane.

It looked like the dealer did the soapy water leak test since the area was wet when they returned the RV to me.

I will ask to see the exact location of the crack when I take it in for the replacement. They really stink at calling me to tell me the parts are in.

They already replaced the regulator.
