Question Rear view camera with monitor?

I'm looking at ordering a GTS 2800/1 and the new brochures for Forester says it has "rear view camera with monitor" while the Sunseeker just says "rear view camera". Does anyone know what this means. I drove a Sunseeker recently and the cameras all appear on the dash radio screen. Do I assume that the Forester is the same? Can anyone confirm this? Although, I really liked last years separate monitor in place of the rearview mirror. Anyone know if the cameras are hardwired or wireless? Thanks!

I also have a 2016 2801. Rear and sideview cameras are connected to a video screen in place of rearview mirror. I've seen this for several years in FR class C's. A much bigger improvement over the video screen incorporated in the radio screen. They do change things year to year so checking with factory rep would be the way to confirm. Seeing a 2017 one way doesn't mean that's what you will get. They make running changes all the time.

Ditto to both posts above. Same setup on our 2016 22' class C. There is a touch switch to keep the rear camera on while driving so you can see your toad, if you like. The RV center that installed our toad hitch told me about that feature this week. I would never had known.

Wish they would add the option to have an inside camera. That way you could see if someone is moving around without looking back.

All the Jenson radios in the cab allow you to connect a camera. . I plan on getting one so I can see the coach and who is moving around.

Not a camera but I mounted a wide angle mirror for that purpose. Mine is a water skiing mirror for a boat. Low tech but works well. .

I had the mirror in our Solera. Worked great. Going to go with the camera this time.

Ok I installed the Jensen camera on the Jensen radio to use as a rear view interior mirror. . Came out and works better than expected. . See install and pics on the thread titled 'More 2801 mods' in the motorhomes-forester section.

The rear view Camera and Side view camera monitors have been moved into the dash radio.

Special request?

Hey Josh
Thanks for answer to original question. My new 2801 is now on order, could I get my dealer to put in a special request that the cable(s) be left out so I can install my own Windshield monitor? There probably will be enough cords in the dash to reach, but have to remove radio to get at them.

You can request that the dealer installs a rear view camera monitor.

If the monitor for the rear/side camera's is now the Jensen radio as opposed to a dedicated monitor on the front windshield, I can see some real issues with that.

1) As a rear view monitor, this wont be much of a problem since your are in reverse and typically going at a low speed. In fact I am thinking of hooking up a second camera to the Jensen radio to use when parking and then re positioning my existing camera to keep and eye on my toad and traffic behind me.

2) However, as a side view camera, this would cause more issues than it would be worth to save the $$ for the dedicated monitor. I.e. Based on my experience with the existing Jensen radio, it is so difficult to look down and over to see my NAV display while driving that I don't even bother using it. I have a holder for my phone running a NAV app that sits in the coin holder just below eye level so a quick glance and I've got what I need. Also, I've noticed that when running the NAV and streaming music that when a call comes in it occasionally crashes the radio to the point where you have to turn off the vehicle to do a complete reboot. I can only imagine what would happen if your also running a streaming video on top of those.

If nothing else I would recommend having a dedicated monitor as an option as I would never consider using the existing Jensen radio as a side view monitor given it's current dash location.

We are using a AVH-X2800 Pioneer head unit with the capabilities to mirror your phone. The GPS is done by mirroring your phone to the radio so this leaves an open area for the rear view monitor and side view cameras.

Josh, that sounds like an interesting setup and may work. However, unless Ford changes the dash layout and puts the radio higher and closer to the driver, I can't help but think it would be a safety issue. From my own experience, having to have to look over and down (below the windshield) every time I wanted to see if there was a car in the adjoining lane would be an issue. At least with mirrors, your eyes don't travel below dashboard height and they are pointing directly at you as opposed to the radio which is pointing towards the rear of the vehicle, not the driver, and cannot be adjusted.

Now I might be missing something and it sounds like the standalone monitor option might be available at the dealer. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

PS Thanks for providing guidance as too future enhancements and changes. I know it certainly helped me with my earlier decision to buy a Forester. Just hope the feedback you see from all the posts here help you and Forest River as much.
