Running engine while on shore power
I spent an hour searching on here but can't find the answer. Can you start the engine on the MH to exercise it while on shore power or do I need to disconnect so it will not cause a conflict between the alternator and the converter? I know when you jump start a vehicle you need to disconnect the jumper cables immediately after starting so the alternators won't fight.

The only issue would be if you drove off while still connected to shore power but all seriousness aside there are no issues or conflicts associated with starting your engine at any time.

I agree with bubbles. I've owned 3 different Class A diesel pushers and NEVER had an issue with running the engine while plugged into shore power. The transfer switch takes care of this for you.

I thought the transfer switch was only for separation from shore power and the gen set to prevent back feeding thru the shore power umbilical cord.

Running the engine while hooked to shore power is no different than running generator while driving down the road as shore power and generator do the same function.

its no different than putting a set of jumper cables to start a vehicle. long as your polarity is matched all will be kosher.

Just bought Georgetown 270s. The tech said it was ok. He said do not run generator and shore at the same time.

Our tech said it was ok to run generator while on shore as the transfer switch would take care of it

You can run the generator while on shore power but why would you want to? It's true the transfer switch should protect the generator and unit electrical system from damage by preventing the generator from closing in. However you are unnecessarily challenging the system to function properly. If the transfer circuit fails say good bye to your generator not to mention the possibility of fire and frying of the electical system and things like TVs or other electronics connected.
This thread started with if you could run the chassis engine which is no problem as the main engine has no connection to the 120 volt system unless you have the inverter option to power some outlets via the 12 volt system.

No, it makes no difference. run engine while plugged it or while genny is running. I run genny plugged in, I run engine while plugged in, I have run engine and genny while plugged in. Hope this is a little bit more informative.

My thought process was to not have to disconnect the shore power line or open the breaker in the garage while I exercise the generator. I guess wearing out the breaker in the garage would be the least costly item to replace if transfer switch were to malfunction while plugged in....and sorry for changing the original post Hey at least were are still talking electrical
