Should the AC Work running off the generator or a 110 outlet
I went camping this weekend and it was over 100° outside. so I started my generator and turned on the AC but every time I did the AC would just shut off and not run.
There was no other load on the generator. The refrigerator was running off of propane.
It was as if a breaker was tripping in the motorhome but that wasn't the case because I checked all the breakers. So I turn the master power on and off and then everything reset.
When I got home I plugged the motorhome into a 110 outlet and tried the AC again and the same thing happened.
I guess my question is should the AC work with the generator or on an 110 outlet or do you have to have it plugged into a 30 amp Circuit

Your AC should work off of the on board generator. I would suspect the transfer switch and not the generator itself. Does other AC powered items work when you are running the generator?

System overload
Sounds like there is a overload of the AC electrical system when you try the air conditioning. Do you by any chance have your hot water tank on electric? If so this may be the trouble. The heater unit in the water tank draws a lot of amps. Turn it off and try the ac again. Hope this was your problem and is a easy fix for you.

If your battery charger is in high rate mode it can also draw a lot of current.
1. Try turning off all 120 volt circuit breakers and see if it will run on genny.
2. How many A/C units do you have - 1 or 2?
3. What size (amps) circuit are you plugged into at home?
There are lots of sources on rv load management on the web. Here is a sample:

AC on 110 outlet
For what it's worth. I have run mine on a 20 amp receptacle without any issue.

Ditto on the 20 amp.
What else was active in your house on the 110 circuit?
In case no one told you, it is important to let your generator run for a short while after starting. I wait a few seconds until after my microwave beeps, that might be the clock.

I would not gauge the health of your AC unit when trying to run it off a 15A 110V AC service. Remember that a 15A 110V circuit can only really supply 12A's of current max so it is highly probably that the AC will not work correctly if at all or your will trip a breaker somewhere. There is also potential issues trying to run it off a 20A circuit since the Dometic can pull more than 16A of current at startup which is all you will get out of a 20A house circuit. So unless you are plugged into 30A service, use the generator for powering the AC unit.
That being said, it would be good to know what you mean by "shut off"? Compressor shutting off? fan shutting off? or Both? My 3011 was back to the shop 3 times to fix a similar problem when it was brand new and was only corrected by replacing the unit entirely. In speaking with some educated folks in the industry, Dometic had a large number of 15K units manufactured with problems due to them changing factory locations and personnel. I think they are past that issue now and hope the unit I have will continue working fine for the foreseeable future. #FingersCrosssed.

The only other things running on the 20 amp circuit is lighting. It is in my garage. If I ran my compressor in the garage, of course, it would trip the breaker. The refrigerator in the Roo was running without any breaker popping.

We also have a 2016 3051s that we have had out only a couple times. We were boondocking and running on generator. It will definitely not run a lot of stuff at once. We had the ac on, DW had a curling iron plugged in, water heater was on electric but fridge was on gas. She fired up the microwave and it actually killed the generator! Definitely have to watch how much you are running at any one time. I know the curling iron and heater were both pulling quite a bit. Still new at this on board generator stuff but learning every day lol! PS we do love our 3051!

AC on generator
I believe you'll need to use at least the 30 amp shore power cable from external generator to run AC. I have a 13.5kw AC and it would need at least a 2500watt generator (more if you have heat strips) just to run AC alone. 20 amp service is really "iffy" as 13.5kw AC generally uses about 2200 watts starting. Nice chart for requirements found at:
