Special orders

This is probably for bclemens...when a unit with full paint is special ordered, is it built and then put in line for the full paint, or is built and painted at the same time? The reason for the question is I recall someone mentioning that the paint department was like 12 weeks behind. Just wondering if the build and paint departments are both that far behind?

Unless things have changed recently the units are not painted in house but sent to outside paint/body shops. The unit is completed except for a few items such as decals of course, awning, ladder, and door grab handle then driven to the scheduled shop for painting. They just mask around things like the windows etc. In 2012 my dealer told me there were 4 different shops that were used, some were better than others.

The Sunseekers and Foresters are sent to a few different paint shops...12 weeks is an exaggeration, they have never been behind 12 weeks. We normally get them back in 7-10 days. At one point they were probably 14 days out, but of course that is added to what can be an already long build time.

At Dynamax we have our own paint booths so we paint in house.

To BC - here is a quote from Joshua Cavitt from 7/16/2015
"Sage, It is a little early to get a estimated date. We are about 12 weeks out with paint. Right now you're looking at early to mid September".
Expanding on my original question...once the factory starts the build, how long does it take to build the unit start to finish?
Thanks

That quote is an estimation of the entire production process from the time the order is placed to when the unit comes offline and goes through paint. That does not mean that paint is 12 weeks behind.

Post Factory Tour and factory pickup

I've been having a great time reading through all of the questions and comments on the daily messages, so thanks to all for that. It's been quite a while since the last RV.

Specifically I've seen several comments regarding factory tours and would be interested in that for the location that Foresters are produced. Over the years I've visited in the mid-west and taken tours at both Honda and Toyota manufacturing locations - very interesting for a long time on and off "car guy".

And secondly, am I correct in remembering comments about folks picking up their special order MH's at the factory - is this a possibility, as it would save me some drive time on the return home.

Thanks in advance for your comments. DLF
