The awning scared me.
I was just sitting outside watching the storm when the awning did it's thing. Very cool but for a sec I thought it was coming down on me. First time I saw it do that.

Read the "awning pole hold kit thread" - order, install and enjoy the weather under your awning!

You must be talking about the auto dump. Has worked numerous times on my unit without fail on one side or the other. I adjust for a specific side runoff.

Had the camper in my driveway last year, forgetting I had the awning out and a sudden storm came up chasing about 20 guests from our back yard into the house. Several noticed the auto dump working and I ended up with a crowd around the front windows, all oohing and ahhing. Fortunately no heavy winds.

Model?
How do I know if my specific awning will auto dump? I've had other RVs that didn't have that feature. I have a Forester 2104W.

We also have the Dometic awning, a "contemporary" model ( 9100 series ) with the gas-struts. The self-dump feature is an attention getter the first time around, our dealer made a point of showing us what to expect during PDI.
We also reel it in for windy stuff, and for overnight / unattended.

There will be these "gas struts" which extend when you open the awning, and will compress if you pull down on the support or when it loads with water. Some people make a mistake of tightening the clamp screw handles, which are maybe useful if you really want to clamp the awning in a particular position, but which will also defeat the "spring" functionality of the gas struts completely. The knobs will NOT get lost as they are large enough to be unable to turn when the awning is retracted.
Picture is of the "patio shade" option but you can see the downward-angled support arm and the gas strut, also the knob on the bottom of the articulated lower bracket.

I forgot to bring mine in when I left for a couple of hours in variable wind conditions on a dry lake- well that spawns dust devils and I ended up with a slightly bent arm.
They do their job...but to a certain extent only.
Someone will advise me to get the hold down poles.
If the wind gets that bad- I don't want my awning out regardless. I just forgot this time.

Tighten up the tension knobs on both awning arms. If they are loose, a down draft will just compress the tension bars and down comes the awning. Or better yet, when weather is imminent, retract the awning
