Turn off daytime running lights on MBS?
Has anyone found a way to turn OFF the daytime running lights on their MBS? I've got a 2015 WITHOUT steering wheel buttons and I can't find anything in the manual to turn them off.
I do want them on while driving, but occasionally I start the engine while dry camping in order to charge the batteries since it's so much quieter than the generator. I found out the hard way that the lights come on (even with the transmission in "Park") when a ranger making his rounds knocked on my door one evening to inform me that I was shining directly into the tent camped across from me (how embarrassing!). I suppose I could probably find the MB fuse but that would be a real pain to do each time.......

Assuming you've got a Sprinter, I found this owners manual that seems to indicate that you have to do it via the on-board computer. See pages 92 and 183.

Hope that helps.

If you turn the light switch to the parking light position the headlights (which are used as DRL on our 2012) go off. Parking lights stay on, of course.

Thanks for trying but unfortunately, my headlight switch is not like the one shown on page 92. Mine only has three positions, not the 4 shown. It is missing the "Auto" position on the far left, and the daytime running lights do come on when the engine is running with the switch in the "Lights Off" position at 12:00.
As for the on board computer discussion on page 183, no amount of pushing the "M" button will produce a headlamp symbol. I have the physical book and the pages in your link match exactly.
I think I need to go to the MB dealer with those two pages in hand and say "What gives?".......

Thanks JLeising, but parking lots are also undesirable since they shine in other campers faces at night.
FYI to non MBS owners, these Mercedes Benz Bluetec diesel engines are REALLY quiet! Almost as quiet as a gasoline engine when idling.

Bob5560g- As I understand it, long periods of idling can cause problems with the bluetec exhaust system and is advised against. Suspect idling long enough to charge the house batteries could cause (expensive) problems.
Pretty easy to unplug the headlight bulbs, but obnoxious and have to remember to plug them back in.
If you find a solution to the DRL issue, I will be quite interested. Having the headlights on whenever the engine is running sure shortens headlight bulb life. Mine, using the Mercedes OEM long life bulbs, last about 20K miles. Auto store replacements only about 3K miles.

On some vehicles the lights will be on until the parking brake is fully engaged. Did you try that?

try having the park brake engaged before starting the engine.... I have a MBS and I have never worried about it. I do appreciate that you want to turn off. It is sure a PIA when someone shines the headlights in the CG. Could throw a towel over the lights

Talking about headlights on Sprinters; has anyone added aftermarket fog lamps to their Sprinters? Forest River doesn't add them, but some other manufacturers do.

A while back this was discussed in the Sprinter-Forum and if my memory serves me.
You can take it to the MB dealer were they will plug it in to there computer and disable this feature but they charge you for this.

drl
On a non MB vehicle I could depress the parking brake and the drl would not come on. It had a foot pedal type parking brake. I never tried it but a technician once told me that if I depress the brake one click I could even drive like that and the drl would not come on.

I've been told the same. FWIW.
