Do you have a Suburban water heater?
The attachments show how the DSI (Direct Spark Ignition) and Fault light are supposed to work. As long as power is flowing to the gas solenoid; the light is ON. When the tank reaches operating temperature, the thermostat opens removing power to the solenoid and the light.
If you are "using" hot water, the temp will be "cold" and the thermostat will "call" for heat and the light will come back on.
