2018 Great Sand Dunes

We just came back from a week-long trip around southern Colorado. The first stop at Mesa Verde National Park, then Pagosa Springs. The third stop was the Great Sand Dunes National Park. We stayed at the San Luis Wildlife Refuge, which is just west of the NP. It used to be a state park, so it has full electrical, but no water or sewer. So we made sure to fill up before arriving.

One of the great attractions of the Sand Dunes at this time of year is the river running alongside the dunes. It usually flows past the the main parking lot this time of year, and dries up in late June. However, because of the drought in this part of the country, the river dried up the middle of May. But, what most people do not know, is that if you have a 4 wheel drive truck, which we do, you can take a jeep trail to where this still is water. So we got to play in the river after all.

You have posted some great campsites and pics. You might consider in the feature putting your campsites in "lets see your campsite" which is a popular thread with tons of folks following the thread to get ideas and view others campsites.

The campsite in the NP was booked over 6 months ago, so we didn't stay there. The one at San Luis was practically empty. In the future, we will just stay there.

We stayed at San Luis last year. It was free at the time because it was between ownerships. Do they charge yet or still free?

It was free for us as well. The last I read was that you only needed a hunting or fishing license to stay there, but nobody checked. The front gates were closed, but I think there was a care taker, but we never saw him in person.
