Update: We must completed the suggested route to Gunnison via 285 and it worked out great! Nice roads, easy pace with almost no traffic. One high pass but an easy climb both ways. Great trip. Thanks!

Glad you enjoyed it. This is the route we have taken on a number of trips to Grand Junction from New Mexico and Texas. The North Cochetopa Pass is more moderate than Monarch Pass and the grades easier to take. Drove a moving van with a tow bar pulling a loaded GMC half-ton pickup truck over that pass to avoid the high passes in 1981 moving my in-laws back to Utah from northern New Mexico. I fell in love with it then. We still take it.
