Beware of 101 north of Frisco
Snow bird coming home to Vancovuer Wa we tried a new route rather then just up I-5...cutting over 58 off of I-5 to 101. Pulling 29foot Heartland with RAM 2500 gas. First stop was Santa Rosa as was big Calif sign tourist information. So we pulled off. Big mistake..pulling into a small town, many lights and many turns to get to the tourist building. Noticed signs everywhere pay to park. Was a sign said RV's behind the building but was tight spot. Parked and went in to find RV spots, places to eat etc heading north on 101. Was met by a woman said we had to pay her first for parking....Said forget it and started to leave but found we had no idea how to get back to 101. Lucky for us we met a guy outside that was laughing and said they got another sucker. He was very nice and helped us get out of the parking lot and back to 101. So from there on we learned, after trying several times in the next few hours to find a restaurant, gas station etc...that if you pull off you could possibly never get back on. They certainly do not cater to RV'rs. Was several hours and couple hundred miles close to the Red Woods at Garberville. we finally found a KOA called Benbow with a historic inn that was great food but expensive, KOA had wonderful camp host...Park was older but plenty of RV spots, 43 dollars...with nice walk to the old inn...Very helpful with information ..such as what to see, Redwood trail etc. From there on up into Oregon roads were bad but there were RV parks and places to eat in the very north park of Calif..and all way up through Oregon..very windy...lot of road damage.....Saw very few RV's in Calif but many on the Oregon Coast as was pouring rain and lot of wind.
