The best place to happen into some would be around Mount Rushmore. If looking for critters, check out the Wildlife Loop road in Custer State Park around sunrise and sunset. Should have no problem seeing buffalo. Usually you will also see antelope, deer, turkeys and sometimes elk.

We did that same trip back in 05. we stayed at Horsethief Campground just outside of Hill City, very nice palce set in the hills. the KOA looked OK when we were there, but we were always out everyday, so we never really were in the campground too much.

As far as Glacier, we stayed at my cousins house up in the foothills with the trailer in his driveway, and then we drove to Glacier and surrounding towns for sightseeing with them.
