Smile Campgrounds near San Diego

We are planning late fall trip to Arizona and Utah and are considering going on to San Diego area as we are avid sailors. Would really appreciate any recommendations for campgrounds and also highway info that might be helpful.

Thanks forum friends.

The San Diego KOA has some good reviews online and seems to be in a good location for the attractions. We haven't stayed there yet, but have a spot reserved for November when we go to visit the Zoo.

SD Campground

Hi sailors,

Chula Vista Rv Park is right on the bay, and about a 12 minute drive on highway 5 to downtown SD. Very nice campground with good amenities as well as nearby restaurants, etc.

Here's a link:

Here's the ones I know of.

Flagstaff, AZ - black Bart's rv park. Have a really decent steakhouse but the servers are all college students for the arts so you get a song a dance along with your meal.

Sedona, AZ- lo lo Mai campground. About ten minutes outside of Sedona and a little hard to find the first time but get a spot on the creek and it's great.

Lake havasu city- AZ. - crazy horse campground. Tons of spots 30 ft from the lake.

Williams,AZ- Grand Canyon railwY rv park- not much of a campground since it is a parking lot, but take the train to Grand Canyon and let someone else drive for once.

San Diego,ca- mission bay rv park. In the heart of San Diego and feet from the water.

I have been to San Diego for a week two separate times and had very different experiences. I have kids so when traveling I look for swimming pools, beach, playground, etc...

San Diego KOA was awesome. We stayed in a Kamping Kabin.

Second time in S.D. we were going to Seaworld so stayed at Campland on the Bay. The most "ghetto" like RV park I've ever been in. It was a weekend and every site seemed to have 3 cars squeezed into them. It might have been a nice place mid-week but was WAAAAY over-crowded when we were there.

San Diego Metro KOA in Chula Vista is the best RV park in the area.

RV park near San Diego

We spent two weeks at the Chula Vista RV Resort this past February. I would definitely recommend this park. Located just a few minutes south of San Diego. The park is quiet and very clean. Downtown SD is easy to get to either driving or via the rapid transit system that has two stops just a short distance from the RV park.

South Carlsbad and San Elijo are my favorites but are 30 - 45 minutes north of San Diego Bay / Mission Bay. But, they have very few hookups and it's hard to get reservations even off season.

If u want to be near the bay and sailing, I suggest the same as a previous poster = Campland on the Bay. The ghetto comment is because it's extremely crowded in the summertime on the weekends. Not my favorite but there are not many options near Mission Bay plus the kids are back in school so it will be less crowded mid-week.

Never stayed at Chula Vista but the neighbors go there often and like it alot.

Enjoy San Diego if u make, it's a nice city.

Two thumbs up for Chula Vista RV and Resort. We've stayed there several time and good sea food is within walking distance.

Don't stay at Diamond Jacks in Jamul,CA I would get reservations at Mission Bay close to ocean and downtown San Diego.

It is my understanding that Mission Bay is no longer in business, as the site will be used for condominiums or commercial. Although it would not be near to the water, we have stayed at Santee Lakes Padre Dam Park during 2 different winters and really enjoyed it. It does not have a lot of activities, but is in a beautiful and peaceful setting.

If you don't mind being 10-12 miles from the water, Sweetwater Summit Regional Park is fantastic. About $33 per night for full hookups, concrete pads for parking your rig, showers and nice views.

Regarding San Diego, here are some other places not yet mentioned:

http://missionbayrvresort.com/
Next door to the aforementioned Campland by the Bay.
Sunland RV Resorts has ten locations for your next escape
Sunland has 5 or 6 RV resorts in the San Diego area.
Paradise by the Sea RV Resort
Paradise By The Sea is located in Oceanside, some 20 miles north of San Diego, close to Camp Pendleton Marine Base.

Chula Vista RV Resort and the Chula Vista KOA are probably the most popular in San Diego since they are close to the city and near the Bay. Campland by the Bay and Mission Bay are right there on the water and their rates attest to that. In California, the closer you are to the water, the higher the rate.

We stayed for a week at Mission Bay RV a couple of years ago when we were adopting our rescue pups. It was a bit expensive, but not terribly so, especially considering it was so clean, well kept, close to everything we were interested in seeing, pet friendly, loved walking down to the bay, and taking the pups on their daily constitutionals just outside the park on the Bay walk, the gate is locked and the walk is sided by the bay on one side, and a residential trailer neighborhood on the other. Besides the locked entry to the walk, there was round the clock security in case of any problems, which was nice, although the park was so quiet, it didn't seem necessary, but we appreciated it anyway. We really enjoyed our stay there. They have their own beach...check out their site on the internet...they have a virtual tour, and the pictures are accurate... so you can see if it appeals to you.

Mission Bay is still open! We spent 5 nights there over last weekend. It should be open through the end of the year and beyond. Get one of the back in water front sites. They have a great view. Click image for larger version
