Several years ago we were out that way and I inquired the same question to another RV group. A nice lady suggested I stay at Custer State Park and just drive to the badlands. It's not a bad drive and you must stop at Wahl Drug for a look see and an ice cream anyway. Custer is a great park with trees and shade and animals and the badlands are well..... the badlands. You're camping in the middle of a desert with no campfires allowed and no shade. I was glad we opted for Custer state park.
Plus Custer park is an easy drive up the scenic needles highway to Mt. Rushmore.
Custer is just the place to stay if you're going to this area.
I just looked.... Custer has a fire ban at the present time also.
It's still my recommendation.
