camping near cody WY

Next July we are visiting Yellowstone over the July 4 week. On the way home we will be stopping for a couple of days in Cody WY. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good campground to stay at? We don't require much but would like electric (30 amp) and water. We will also have our dogs with us so we are looking for a campground with some grass around the spots and a spot with enough space to put up xpens for the dogs. thanks - Lisa

We stayed at Absaroka Bay RV Park right in Cody a couple of months ago. It was OK for our dog and as I recall there was grass on each side of the spaces. I don't recall exactly how wide the spaces were, I know it wasn't tight because I always remember that. It doesn't have a lot in the way of amenities, i.e. no pool, but it was a pleasant and clean RV Park and we would stay there again.

Buffalo Bill Cody State Park, west end furthest from the dam about 12 miles west of Cody. $22, 30 amp service, water every third site, pull throughs with park on one side, grass and open fields on the other. Lots of open space for dog. We left 5er their two days and went to Yellowstone and back this last July. Then pulled through Yellowstone up to Bozeman.

Great suggestions. We're heading that was late next summer. Learning all we can for the trip up and back.

We stayed half way between Cody WY and Yellowstone park, staying at Yellowstone Valley Inn and RV park. This Inn and RV park is on highway 14,16 and 20 leading to the east entrance to Yellowstone on the Shoshone River, with full hook-ups.

We stayed 3 nights at the Ponderosa on our way to Grizzly Rv in West Yellowstone. Nice place and close to the Cody Rodeo grounds.

Thumbs up

Just returned from Wyoming and neighbouring states. Cody has alot to offer for things to do. A huge museum with 5 sections, a two day visit right there. The Cody dam was very interesting, the Japanese internment camp, the Old Town set up with original historical western buildings and much more. We had planned on 1 night and stayed 4. We stayed at the Ponderosa and thought it was well kept, clean and has grass for the pooches.
We were in site 58, a bit too close to 5 am traffic. There are sites well away from the road.
Advice...don't bring your trailer to Yellowstone. Lots of steep mountàins with switch backs.
Something we wished we hadn't done was take highway 16 east. Beautiful scenery but too much for my breaks. I am told 14 east is more challenging, but that's for another discussion.😊

We stayed at Ponderosa a couple of years ago and it was okay. Fairly open with few trees, good services and convenient to everything in Cody. The suggestion not to go into Yellowstone with your rig seems a bit over-cautious, since many hundreds of RVs of all shapes and sizes go over the mountains into the park every year. We towed our 5th wheel into the park from Cody with snow on the road and it wasn't a problem. Trying to stay in Cody and sightseeing in Yellowstone seems impractical due to the distance from Cody to the Park and the size of the park. You'll spend most of your time going to and from. Of course, you can stay in one of the lodges, but then, why do you have an RV? However, finding a space in the park can be problematic without a reservation.

We go there and stay at Henry's Lake in Idaho. Full hookups, grass, and good fishing. 14 miles from West Yellowstone.

We very rarely stay at private campgrounds so our pick was Buffalo Bill State Park and we liked it a lot. There are 2 sections and we stayed at the one on the river, further west, with pull thrus and electric. Beautiful sunsets.

This is a great thread. I am planning a similar trip next summer. Planning on a few days in Cody on the way there and back and will look at these campgrounds so thx for sharing. How are the grades coming in 14? I have reservations at fishing bridge so I will be towing into the park one way or another.

Last time we just had a car and DW had us staying in big sky....took 6hrs of driving to get to the park and back let alone driving in the park. I am staying IN the park this time. She would not do the hotels or cabins in Yellowstone.

thanks for all the suggestions. We made reservations at Ponderosa but will be staying in Yellowstone at fishing bridge for that part of our trip. We are staying several days in Cody and it looks like we will have plenty to keep us busy. Lisa

Another vote for Absaroka Bay RV Park . we stayed there last year on our 4 month journey. We also stayed in Fishing bridge during our trip. Fishing bridge was great for location but terrible for their dirt roads.
