My friend has taken pictures of the "missing" water faucet handles.
From my friend on the East coast;
"All the pump handles from the water spigots in the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park were removed as part of the government shutdown. Seems kinda silly to me to do this in a park that is virtually unmanned, open and with no entrance fees.
The places where I entered the park on my bike were not barricaded, taped or signed...only the gates to parking lot were closed and the outhouses were locked and signed. I was on the trail on Sunday and it was being heavily used. It doesn't seem the smart test was applied to the closure of open parks, memorials and cemeteries/battlefields.
In the six miles of trail that I normally use, all three spigots had their handles had been removed...and the entire trail is 185 miles long! They paid staff to travel the entire length, some of them are difficult to access with vehicles, to remove around 90 handles!
