Hi, searay245se!
Well, we arrived in Deadwood around 7 p.m. last night. Based on Internet reviews we made a reservation at "Hidden Valley Campground" which is about 6 miles south of Deadwood on 385.
It's a very nice spot...the sites are terraced and pretty level... We traveled over 6 hrs. before arriving here so we haven't explored too much. Check out "Whiskey Gulch Campground" also on 385. We passed it enroute to HVCG, it looked nice and is a bit closer to town. Just to warn you, there is a lot of road construction going on through the town of Deadwood .. a bit slow going. If you choose HVCG, don't follow the directions on the GPS, do not turn left on Galena Road...proceed straight another mile, and you'll run right into the campground on the right.
Have fun....travel safe!

Custer State Park, Game Lodge area. Big sites with 50 amp , but no sewer or water. The faucet was 125 feet from camper so no problem to run a hose to top off water. The dump station easy to get to as well. Price is best......25.00 a night. The sites are at least 50 feet apart.

If you get a chance, stop by the saloon in downtown Deadwood, So. Dakota, and see the re-enactment of the Wild Bill Hikok shooting, holding the "dead mans hand"

Stayed at the Rafter J in July. Great site, close to Hill City and Mt. Rushmore. Loved the space between sites and the layout of the campground. Definitely plan on going back there.

Rafter J is a great park, large sites and close to Mt Rushmore, Deadwood, Custer State Park. While in Deadwood, take the tour bus up the mountain to the cemetery where Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried. The Needles Highway is a most interesting drive if you have a vehicle that will fit thru a very narrow and low tunnel.

Planning on staying at Rafter J Bar next August. Needles Hwy is on the day trip list. Will my F250 w/o trailer fit?

I drove my Dodge 2500 thru (had to pull in the mirrors) and watched several Ford 250 and Chevy 2500 pass thru without any problems. Just made me a little nervous, being so low and narrow, but it is a great drive.

I will second "Rafter J Bar Ranch". Extremely nice resort. Your next bet would be the state parks if they are not reserved.

If like the Needles then try 89A (Iron Mt. Rd.)out of Keystone to Custer. There's corkscrews, switchbacks, and tunnels across a mountain road.
