Driving to Glacier NP

Planning to go to Glacier from the east. What's the drive like across western Montana? We'll be towing a 30 foot fifth wheel.

I have been looking for the same information, haven't had much luck. Looks like a lot of two lane roads. We have a 38 foot fifth wheel. Tows great, but wind is always a concern. When are going?

If you are planning on Hwy 2, the hi line, across Montana it is wide open rolling country and all 2 lane good blacktop. Lot's of heavy oil field traffic in the Williston ND and Glendive MT area and any and all CG's are full of oil field workers.

Have a great trip. I've been to a bunch of the famous National Parks and Glacier is definitely one of my all time favorites. Enjoy!

I've only been as far as Shelby on #2 Hwy, from the east. The highway is good. There isn't a shoulder to pull over on, in Montana. I pull a 35ft 5er and no problems. What Blackrock stated above is right. Do a search for campgrounds. They are there. We stay in them. Glasgow, Havre, Wolf Point etc. Depending on where you are coming from and how far you travel each day.

Hwy 2 is a great drive across the top of the US. Many small towns but lots of open road. Yes oil field country but interesting. We stayed at Glacier Meadows campground on south side of the park. I think we were there like June 22 and the road to the sun had just opened the day before.

There was still 10' of snow lining the road at the top. Was awesome. Enjoy.

The trip from the east is great, but long.
We travel with a pop-up.

I've not been on MT-2 since motorcycle days (30 yr +/-).

If you are taking time to sight see you might try I-90 through SD; ND is kinda, empty. At Billings, MT you can either follow I-90 to I-15 or leave I-90 and cut across. We followed I-90 last summer, but it adds several hours to the trip.

If you are looking for the shortest route, I'd still pick I-90.

This is the way I went last summer from northern illinois. Long drive, good road, no issues at all. We didn't have any strong crosswinds are any problems at all. I was towing 38' 5er with a f-250 diesel.

We are now looking at staying in Billings on our way to Glacier this summer. Looking at different options , Hwy 3 to I-15 or, I-90 to I-15 or, I-90 to US 287 then I-15. Any thoughts on any of these routes pulling a fifth wheel?

Look into MT-87 to I-15 at Great Falls.

I was born and raised in Montana a long time ago. If I had business in Great falls I would head north out of Billings on Rte 3, connect with hwy12 at Lavina then east to Harlowtown turning north again on 191 and on up to Eddys Corner (lunch stop) then west on 87 and on in to Great Falls. All good road, Rte 3 is a little narrow in spots but it is all real pretty central Montana prairie country. The home of Charlie Russel.
