Driving west thru Denver to Golden
My DW and I are going to Golden CO next week. We will be coming from MN on I-76. I am wondering what the best way to get thru Denver to get to Golden. This will be the first time with our Salem 27RKSS with the Dodge 3500 and am concerned about the mountains. Last year we pulled it with an old Tundra and almost burned up the brakes coming into Glacier.

As you come into the Denver area on I-76 stay in the right lane and you automatically be routed onto I-70 westbound into Golden. If your final destination is Golden, you won't be in the mountains at all.

Golden is just on the West edge of Denver. Try to plan on going through Denver before or after rush hour. That experience can be traumatic in a car!

Thank you everyone for your comments. I feel a lot better now. I will plan to go thru during the middle of the day when traffic might be a little less intense. We are coming in for the Donor Dash on July 16th. Love the weather there.

Be advised that towing/maneuvering in downtown Golden can be challenging to the say the least.

Sounds like you've been in the area before but if not and you're looking for something to do, drive on over to Red Rocks arena and check it out, pretty amazing place. Also the Coors tour - it's free, self directed and offers a nice sampling at the end. Just catch a shuttle in town, it runs every 10 minutes or so. Also, Lookout Mtn Road is worth the drive and shouldn't be too hard in your Dodge.

Thanks for the tips. We did the hotel thing in Denver the last time so this will be a new experience.

FYI this is a good rv park to stay at.
https://dakotaridgerv.com/
Not many around denver area, but you could drop your rig here and then just use the Tow or toad to get into Golden.
After getting off i-76 onto i-70 look for the colfax exit (it's a ways west), then head west on colfax until you get to this place.
Pretty easy

Stayed at this place a couple years back. It is wall to wall with barely enough room for a table between sites. We were there only one night and then moved on to a place a bit south. Camping

Thanks again for all the comments. We picked this park because it was close to the Donor Dash at Washington Park. It looks like it will work out for the 3 days we will be there. Headed to Estes Park after this.

You didn't mention where you were going in Golden. If you are headed to the Coors Brewery, the School of Mines, or the Colorado Railroad Museum, don't use I-70 except between I-76 and Colorado Highway 58. CO 58 takes you right onto Washington Avenue, the main street of Golden, and you will see signs directing you to Coors and CSM.
If you want the RR Museum, get off CO 58 at McIntyre St. a couple of miles east of Golden. Then turn left (west) at 44th Avenue (the first westbound street north of CO 58) and the museum will be on your right about 1/2 mile west (right after you cross the tracks).
If Dakota Ridge is fully booked, as it often is in summer, the Jeffco Fairgrounds on US 6 at Indiana have campsites with hookups. But you can also stay right in Golden at Clear Creek Park, which has 22 FHU sites and 11 50A-only sites. It is located at the west end of 10th St. Not cheap at $40/night for electric-only sites, but more convenient than Dakota Ridge or the fairgrounds and about the same price, if you are just doing things in Golden for several days.
I was just in Golden yesterday because I brought our trailer home from there. We keep it in a storage lot just a few blocks from CO 58 and McIntyre.

I towed a 5th wheel through Denver on I-25 on a Saturday, will never do that again. I believe everybody in Co. goes to town on a Saturday, traffic was crazy.

Crazy traffic congestion in Denver. Boulder is worse.

Thanks for the suggestions on sights to see. We don't have any specific plans right now. Went to the Coors Brewery quite a while ago so that would be interesting to see the changes. The other museums sound good also.

We stayed at Dakota Ridge for several months. We were told we would have leave by April 1st because the space was spoken for (as were all of the other spaces). Apparently, a bunch of wealthy people block reserve parts of the park (including some Hollywood types) months in advance. It is onlt open for general rentals over the fall, winter and early spring. It left us scrambling for new digs. Fortunately, I was offered a new job in Fort Worth, so they helped us by calling ahead to Wagon Wheel RV park in Aledo TX. It turns out that it is the sister RV park to Dakota Ridge. Both are nice facilities and the folks are really nice.

They are tight spots. It is working for what we need. It is clean and close enough to everything but pretty quiet. Nice pool and facilities.
