El Paso to Carlsbad, NM---keep fuel topped off!

We filled up at exit 0 on I-10 in Texas and followed US 62/180 towards Carlsbad, NM pulling our 2014 Flagstaff 8528ikws with our 2015 Silverado gas 2500, through very strong winds over very hilly roads. By the time we got to Guadlupe Mts. N.P. We needed emergency gas ($15.00 for 2 gallons), as there are NO facilities along this route! We were able to coast into Whites City, NM on fumes to fill up 30+ gallons. Fore warned is fore armed!

Welcome to Texas! That is in the LARGE side of the state. There are a few long stretches in West Texas.

My favorite part of Texas..... There used to be a gas station but there just wasn't enough business to keep it open. It was at the intersection of 62 and 54. McKitrick Canyon is one of the most beautiful spots in Texas....


The winds out there can be pretty rough. A hard headwind sure sucks the tank dry in a hurry...

I'm old enough to remember going to McKittrick Canyon at the peak of the Fall Colors and hike the trail without seeing anyone. Nowadays McKittrick Canyon is crowded in late October.

One September, when I was too old to do it, my wife and I hiked up to Guadalupe Peaks. It was 70 degrees and amazingly no wind. Here is my story:
