Experience on Cuesta Grade - US 101 - San Luis Obispo

We'll be taking the trailer out to an RV park in Pismo Beach and this will be first trip on I-5/101. From what I can tell, coming from the Central Valley, the only real grade is the Cuesta Grade, which is about 7% for 7(?) miles. I've only pulled a TT once a long distance up into the Sierra Foothills over the Twain Harte Pass passed Strawberry and my setup did fine. Just curious what the Cuesta Grade is like.

I live in the area and drive the Cuesta grade to work and home everyday. It does have a steep grade but is very short maybe 2-3 miles. Would not worry about it.

A few years back it was called a "Formidable Foe" to those who traveled it.

Looking at your tow vehicle, shouldn't be much of a challenge.

Thanks all. With very little towing experience under my belt, I'm just a little nervous!

I have the exact same truck setup as you do (except for the color) and my trailer is approx 10k loaded... I have towed that grade 3 times (once in 98 degree heat) and have never had a problem. Expect to lock it in 3rd and give her the throttle. I do 60 up that grade at 3900rpm ( the truck would go faster if I let it). Looking at your combination I think you'll be just fine. My only advice is... Be proactive with your speed going back down as the ecoboost doesn't allow for the best engine braking due to the displacement.

Happy to report we made it here and relaxing at the site. Truck did awesome! I found it was easier for me to put it in manual and let me decide when to downshift etc vs tow/haul. Grealearning experience for me.
