Seems like a lot closer than Trailer Village. Any thoughts on this? And how much time is really needed to do the Skywalk justice? Seems like a pretty quick experience? Or is there more to it?

Here is an article that has pros and cons of Grand Canyon West. It is not part of the national park. And the ticket package, like everything else, is not cheap for what you get.

It is about 5 hours (250 miles I believe) from the South Rim. Not nearly as much to do there as the South Rim.
If you do go, take the old 66 highway route to Kingman. Very nice drive (much better than I40), and you can stop at Grand Canyon Caverns if you have time. It's a quaint, quirky place with an interesting cave tour and a good 50s diner. Bare bones RV park, but very usable. They have a Good Sam Rally there occasionally.
If it was me, I would spend more time at the South Rim.
