Heading west this spring and summer (Reservations or Not)

What have you done and recommend? Really don't want to be on a schedule if possible. Traveling with another Motorhome.

What do you define as "west" to us, Montana is "east".

Seriously, though, as long as you're travelling before or after the school summer vacation, reservations are not necessary - except for major attractions like Yellowstone.

Out here, we've found that, if you leave home on Sunday and plan to head home again Friday, there's no problem. If you plan to stay over a weekend during school vacations, certainlly inquire about availability. We've often checked in a CG on Thursday before a holiday and have been able to stay through Tuesday without reservations.

if you plan on California or any of the major Western national parks, you better make reservations.

Join Passport America and get their catalog of campgrounds. There are some closed dates for using your 50% off. On those dates use your Woodall's to find a place and make a reservation. The Passport America book and website is pretty descriptive and you can find great pull through sites. Also, don't overlook city and county camping areas. Free city parks with pull throughs are well kept secret for some people. The earlier you stop the better chance you have without reservations and if you stay more than a day or two, you will get a better site at some places.

My wife and I traveled from Houston, Tx are to Yellowstone via NM, AZ, Las Vegas, the only reservations we made were in Vegas and West Yellowstone. Some stops we had to call several places before we found a spot, but we always found a nice, clean KOA to stay in.
