Highway 1

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone has taken a 26 foot, or bigger, trailer up Highway 1 from San Simeon to Big Sur. Just want to know if those tight turns up the coast are doable.

Well, it's been 44 years and I was on a motorcycle, but I don't see why not. There are campgrounds there. They'll take TT's, but I really don't know how big.

Check with the CHP before you go. Hwy 1 is currently closed from Ragged Point north to Fuller's due to rock/mudslides.

We live in San Luis Obispo county. Everyone I know who camps in big sur gets there from the north. The turns going from the south in a motor home or trailer is too much. Wouldn't recommend unless your driving class b.

We have a 24ft motorhome and drove from south to Big Sur last year. There are sharp turns and narrow passes, but we did fine. I saw bigger motorhomes on the same stretch as well.

We took the 101 up to Big Sur. Then on the way home we took hwy 1 from Big Sur south and stayed in Morro Bay before merging to the 101. There were a couple turns that were a little tight, but nothing that had me worried. We were in a 3/4 crew cab standard bed pulling a 26ft tt. I would do it again without thinking. With that being said, I don't know about taking the 1 heading north. But going south was easy. Jerry.

I have pulled a 29 foot 5th wheel thru the area with no issues. Bigger concern would be time of year and landslides. Plus pretty nasty going through in rain storms.

Highway 1, in the Big Sur area, is a huge mess right now.
So much damage, the Highway through the area, may be closed down for months.

Looks like Hwy 1 will be a big no go for months. Here is a current news article.

I think I would wait till next year to do the drive, Caltrans could take months deciding on what bridge design to go with never mind getting it built.

They are claiming to have the road opened by September 30th. We'll see, it is California after all.

Not if they don't pass Jerry Brown's 5.2 billion tax initiative.

Drove a 25' Minnie Winnie north bound thru there with 4 pre-teens screaming all the way back in the early 80's.

Fun drive!

Now there's a huge landslide on Hwy 1. Happened a few weeks ago.

I believe that this was an additional slide or it was a slide that got worse.

It's gonna take months for them to get it back open again.
I don't think it will be fixed until after the summer.

Hwy 101 Big Sur Closed

We live in Cambria and our favorite CG is Plaskett Creek just south of Limekiln. Due to the continuing landslides the road will not be reopened for at least a year from now. We were able to drive a 24 foot Class C with a toad up as far as Monterey with no problem when the road was open. Heck, hundreds of full-blown tourist buses took that route all the time. Scary, though.
